Traces of Texas reader Glendora Procelle kindly sent in this photo, which is a sign at the Eastland City Cemetery in Eastland, Texas. Josiah "Doc" Scurlock is Glendora's great great grandfather. He had a remarkable life story. He rode with Billy the Kid, participated in the Lincoln County Wars, and later moved to Eastland, where he became a very respected citizen. He was later portrayed by actor Kiefer Sutherland in the movie "Young Guns." You can read about him on the TSHA site but here's one little morsel for you: in about 1870, when he was 21 years old, he went to Mexico. While there, he and another man had an argument over a card game and drew their pistols. The other man shot first and the bullet went through Doc's mouth, knocking out his front teeth and coming out the back of his neck without any more serious damage. Doc quickly returned fire, killed the man who shot him --- then lived for 60 more years. As I said, it's a remarkable story.
