A simulation exercise to expose newcomers to a world filled with communication barriers. Such barriers are faced by people who are Deaf, Deaf-Blind, and Hard of Hearing in the present world. The majority of the citizens of Different, Different World have varying degrees of hearing loss, and there is very little use of speech communication.

Just wrapped up our 2 week long Deaf/Disabilities Awareness Week!!! We had several awesome events, including volunteering for the day event at Wake Forest University for deaf/hard-of-hearing and visually impaired kids, an awareness fair, and "Different, Different World." Stay tuned for photos!

Described and Captioned Media Program The DCMP provides free on-demand educational videos with captions, audio description, and ASL. Services are free for parents and educators with at least one preK-12 student with a disability.

Alexander Graham Bell was originally an instructor for deaf children. He stumbled across his telephone invention while trying to make a hearing aid for his wife and some of his deaf pupils.

Deaf people vote, pay taxes, drive cars, attend business, social, and religious events... Deaf people are lawyers, dentists, doctors, chemists, inventors, artists, sculptors, writers, architects, poets, musicians, newspaper editors, clergy, actors, and teachers, to name just a few! They can do everything anyone else can - except hear!

Beethoven began losing his hearing when he was 28 years old. By the time he was 49 he could no longer hear. When Beethoven composed his ninth symphony, he was profoundly deaf.

If you were to say I can’t go to the store (without shaking your head no) there might be some confusion. The word can’t and the word can both look the same on the lips. Here are some other words that look the same on the lips:
Can vs. can’t
Salad and talent
Olive juice and I love you
Mail and pail

Only about 30% of speech is produced on the lips. Most words are unidentifiable on the lips and many different sounds look the same on the lips. This means that a person who lip-reads must depend on cues from the topics being discussed and from the environment. Single words, names, or discussions without supporting information can be difficult.
