Dr. Dolores “Lola” Moreau, 43, PhD in herpetology from Tulane, walked away from her university job the day the dean told her “snakes are no place for a lady.” She used her grandmother’s sugar-plantation money to buy 140 acres of wild Everglades sawgrass and cypress to study rare tree frogs and cottonmouth behavior.
She lived in a stilted cypress-plank shack she raised above flood level, waded daily with a headlamp, wore khaki, carried vials, notebook, and a nickel-plated .32 revolver “for gators and the occasional moonshiner.”
In 1946 a federal mosquito-control inspector arrived to spray DDT on her land; she calmly lectured him for ninety minutes on frog-skin permeability while pinning a live coral snake to a board. He packed up his sprayer, radioed headquarters to cancel the operation in her section, and drove away with a jar of tadpoles as a gift.
Her photographs and notes helped establish the first amphibian sanctuary in the Everglades. She continued sending illustrated field cards to herpetological societies until 1989.

This build took a few months, but it’s finished now! Here’s a look back at the process…
