A century after disappearing from Saudi Arabia, one of the world's rarest animals is making an extraordinary comeback. 🐾

The Prince Mohammed bin Salman Royal Reserve has announced the successful birth of a male onager foal—the first known birth of the species in Saudi Arabia for more than 100 years.

At first glance, the onager looks a little like a donkey, but it is actually one of the rarest wild members of the horse family. These remarkable animals once roamed across vast stretches of the Middle East and Central Asia, thriving in harsh deserts and open steppes where few other large mammals could survive.

Over the last century, however, hunting, habitat loss, expanding human settlements, and competition from livestock pushed the species into dramatic decline. Entire populations disappeared, and the onager vanished from many parts of its historic range.

Today, fewer than 600 are believed to survive in the wild.

That makes every birth important.

Conservationists waited until the young foal had safely passed its most vulnerable first year before announcing the news, turning what might seem like a small event into a major conservation milestone.

For Saudi Arabia, the birth represents the return of a species that had been absent for generations. For wildlife conservationists around the world, it is proof that carefully managed reintroduction and protection programmes can help bring even the rarest animals back from the brink.

A tiny foal may not seem like much.

But for one of the world's rarest wild equids, it could represent the beginning of a remarkable recovery story.
