Reading Roots Tutoring LLC, founded by Raven Marshall, a Reading Specialist, is an in-person reading tutoring service working with K–5 students who are struggling with foundational reading skills. My mission is to grow confident readers by strengthening their literacy roots in phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and com
The right kind of practice leads to better reading.
If a child is practicing the wrong strategy over and over: guessing words, memorizing patterns, and/or avoiding decoding, then the struggle usually continues no matter how much time is spent practicing.
That is why the method matters.
Struggling readers need instruction that helps them:
• break words apart
• connect sounds to letters
• decode with confidence
• understand what they are reading
Reading progress is not built through repetition alone.
It is built through the right kind of repetition 💛
Not every reading story begins with confidence.
Some begin with tears during homework.
Avoiding books.
Guessing words.
Saying “I hate reading” before the page is even opened.
For many parents, it can feel heartbreaking watching their child struggle with something that seems to come so easily to others.
Progress is possible.
One of the most rewarding parts of this service is watching children:
• reading aloud without fear
• realizing they are capable after all
These moments happen when a child receives the right kind of support 💛
“Just give it time” can feel reassuring in the moment.
But for many struggling readers, time alone is not what closes the gap.
Children need instruction that is:
• explicit
• structured
• targeted to their specific skill needs
Because when a child continues guessing words, avoiding reading, or falling further behind, the issue is usually that the foundation has not fully clicked yet.
The earlier we support those foundational skills, the easier it becomes to rebuild confidence alongside them 💛
Reading struggles are not something children simply “outgrow.”
They need the right kind of support.
Teachers are working incredibly hard for their students every single day.
But the reality is, classrooms were not designed to provide the level of individualized reading support that many struggling readers truly need.
A child who is behind in reading often needs:
• more repetition
• more direct instruction
• more opportunities to practice skills slowly and intentionally
• more feedback in real time
That does not mean anyone is failing your child.
It means some children need support that goes beyond what the school day can realistically offer.
Extra reading support is helping fill the gap so children can feel more successful. 💛
Helping a struggling reader at home does not have to look perfect to make a difference.
Small, consistent moments matter more than long, exhausting homework battles.
A few simple shifts can help reading feel:
• safer
• calmer
• less overwhelming
• more encouraging for both parent and child
The most powerful thing you can give a struggling reader is not pressure to perform but support that helps them keep trying.
Progress in reading is built one small win at a time 💛
Save this for tonight’s reading time.

Every child’s reading struggle looks different.
That is why our 9-week package begins with understanding the child first and where the child is in his/her reading journey.
We focus on:
• identifying foundational gaps
• building decoding and phonics skills
• strengthening fluency and comprehension
• creating personalized support plans
• tracking progress
Real reading growth happens when instruction is intentional, structured, and tailored to the learner.
And just as importantly, we want children to leave sessions feeling more confident than when they walked in 💛
If your child has been struggling with reading, we would love to support you.
Children cannot build reading confidence on top of missing foundational skills.
When decoding feels difficult, every sentence takes more energy, every page feels heavier, and eventually, frustration starts showing up before the book even opens.
Struggling readers need:
• explicit instruction
• foundational skill-building
• repetition that makes sense
• support that meets them where they are
We start by helping reading finally click 💛
Some children spend years looking like they are reading…
But underneath, they are:
• guessing words
• memorizing patterns
• struggling to decode
• working twice as hard to keep up
So parents end up wondering:
“How have we been doing this for so long if nothing is sticking?”
The truth is reading progress becomes very difficult when foundational skills are missing.
More practice alone does not always solve the problem.
Children need instruction that helps reading actually make sense not just more time spent staring at the page.
When we strengthen the foundation first, everything else becomes easier to build 💛

We are so grateful to the families who trust us to be part of their child’s journey 💛
Reading progress is never just about words on a page. It is about confidence, connection, and helping children believe in themselves again.
Reading struggles rarely stay in one place.
A child who struggles to decode words in the early grades often begins struggling with:
• comprehension
• vocabulary
• confidence
• participation in class
• avoiding books altogether
Because reading is the foundation for almost every other area of learning.
The earlier we identify the gap, the easier it is to support it before frustration and self-doubt start taking over.
That support does not have to feel scary or overwhelming.
With the right instruction, children can make meaningful progress and begin seeing themselves differently again 💛
