In the beginning, there was V12. And today there’s V12. Since its inception in 1963, the epochal 60-degree V12 engine has remained the flagship motor for Automobili Lamborghini.
Yet, in its 55-year history there have only been two generations of the V12 engine. The story goes that Ferruccio Lamborghini contracted with Giotto Bizzarrini to design an engine that would outpace competitors. He succeeded with a 3.5-liter V12 that produced 250 horsepower and was fitted for the original 350GT.
Over time the V12 was progressively redesigned for successive supercars like the Miura, Countach, Diablo and Murciélago. But it wasn’t until the legendary Aventador that Lamborghini went back to the drawing board to produce a whole new V12 architecture featuring 5.5 liters of displacement.
One thing remains for certain: Lamborghini should be synonymous with V12.
