On this day in history, June 6, 1944, as Operation Overlord began, the skies over Normandy were filled with the incredible sight of hundreds of parachutes and Airspeed Horsa gliders heading towards Landing Zone N near Ranville. From the aerial view, the French fields were dotted with the white dots of parachutes slowly descending to the ground, while the gliders glided silently towards their designated landing areas. This moment marked the beginning of one of the largest and most daring airborne operations in military history.
The troops of the British 6th Airborne Division were tasked with securing bridges, road junctions, and strategic areas on the eastern flank of the Allied landing beaches. Despite facing significant risks from weather, night navigation, and enemy fire, most of the troops successfully landed and carried out their missions. The dramatic sight of parachutes filling the sky and Airspeed Horsa gliders scattered across the fields around Ranville became a symbol of the courage of the paratroopers and glider crews who helped pave the way for the successful D-Day invasion of Normandy.🇬🇧
