George Pickle for Helena Mayor
This page is dedicated to keeping Helena informed and connected to my platform, experience, and vision for the future of our city.

Yesterday, I stated that Helena's municipal election was NOT a popularity contest. Or it shouldn't be - because Helena's needs demand better. And based on what we've seen today, I totally stand by that statement. If you live in Helena, Alabama, I implore you to exercise your constitutional right to elect a Mayor and Council who will exercise rational decision-making over emotional bells and whistles. If you don't vote, you shouldn't gripe. Share if you agree.

Plain spoken? Yes. Matter of fact? You better believe it. Transparent? For sure. Straight talking? Absolutely! This election is not a popularity contest. It is of vital importance as Helena's future hangs in the balance. I am the only mayoral candidate with the knowledge and experience to turn it around. Do your homework and VOTE like you never have before.
So if you're thinking "The Pickle" is harsh... Building inspector is one of those professions where if you haven’t angered someone, you weren’t doing your job.

Providing a clear example of transparency. ✅
Where does George live? With over 30 years of dedicated service to the City of Helena, my commitment and qualifications speak for themselves. The facts are on record and not hard to find, but the Mayor of Helena is the position I seek. Unfortunately, City Hall is currently riddled with mistrust. My wife and I have lived in....

Thanks, RB. And Poppit!
The Man, The Myth, The Pickle I first met George Pickle back in 1990 on a jobsite in Helena, Alabama, and will never forget how approachable he was. Even then, it was clear George was someone who took great pride in his work and who carried himself with integrity, patience, and professionalism. His long history in Helena is truly...
After years of serving our community, I've learned what works and where we can improve. My vision is a Helena that's stronger, safer & more connected.
As your Mayor, I promise to lead with integrity, listen with empathy, and serve purposefully. Let's build a brighter future together - efficient, transparent, and driven by you, the people!

Scott Johnson is ramping it up!
So while I cannot address any recent purchases, I can tell you what I know.
The State of Alabama purchases vehicles through a competitive bidding process, often involving state contracts with specific vendors like McSweeney Auto Group in Clanton and Long Lewis Ford of the Shoals. These contracts allow state agencies to purchase vehicles at pre-negotiated prices and terms, with no sales tax, etc.
For instance, the current state bid contract for vehicles expires August 26, 2025, and there will be a new contract coming up in its place. I did check to see what those are this year and will attach a screenshot.
Several years ago, the State Bid included small SUVs. Thus, all police officers in newer vehicles were driving those. Do you happen to remember when the patrol cars were Crown Victorias? Every municipality loved them, and they were cheap through the State Bid.
Do I think it’s a little much? We would have to compare the State Bid price to the average retail price to see what kind of deal it is. Or compare the State Bid price to new Ford Explorers on a lot, then check the maintenance and gas expense against a full-size truck.
And yes, they typically drive them home as they are often called out.
So here’s something to ponder: I have heard that the current administration has gone to replacing vehicles every 2 years.
It’s definitely another something to look into as the City will be forced to tighten its belt. Real tight.
Again, great question.
