For Environmental Science student Tehya Schweitzer, learning at Carroll goes beyond the classroom — it means getting hands-on experience, conducting meaningful research, and exploring the passions that inspire her.
Originally from Bismarck, North Dakota, Tehya chose Carroll because she was drawn to the community, the campus experience, and the opportunity to make an impact through environmental science.
As part of her research, Tehya is conducting bird surveys throughout the Helena area to explore how habitat type and urbanization influence local bird populations — specifically focusing on Black-capped Chickadees and Mountain Chickadees. Her passion for this work comes from seeing firsthand how changing landscapes can impact the environment. 🐦
“I came to Professor Mandy with a few different research ideas, and we narrowed in on this one,” Tehya shared. “She’s been very supportive and has really let me take the lead on the project, which has been nice because I feel like I have ownership of it.”
Beyond research, Tehya is building experience in the environmental field through her internship with WWC Engineering, where she works on GIS mapping and environmental report writing. She also volunteers with Montana Wild and runs her own small baking business, Golden Loaf, where she creates homemade breads, bagels, dinner rolls, and more.
When asked what makes Carroll special, Tehya points to the people.
“Carroll has a really great sense of community. Even with the professors, I feel like they deeply care about us and our success. The Environmental Science program feels like one big family.”
From field research to faculty mentorship, Carroll students are encouraged to explore their passions, build meaningful connections, and make a difference — both on campus and beyond. 💜🌎

✝️ This summer, Carroll College Campus Ministry led a group of students on a two-week pilgrimage to Rome and Assisi, visiting sacred sites, deepening their faith, and experiencing the rich traditions of the Catholic Church.
“For me, the most powerful moment was a graced time of prayer up at St. Francis’ hermitage... The place was holy with the prayers of the Saints, and the treasure of relationship with God was there waiting for me.” — Chris Yakawich, Campus Minister & Assistant Director of Campus Ministry
“Pilgrimage was an incredible opportunity to witness God’s providential love for us... Praying where saints have prayed and walking with them throughout this pilgrimage renewed my excitement and love for our faith!” — Tori Wallace, Sophomore
From ancient basilicas to the quiet mountains of Assisi, students encountered the beauty of the global Catholic community, strengthened their faith, and built lasting community with one another. This pilgrimage was a powerful reminder that faith is a journey meant to be shared. 🏛️
