Retail is the hub of a local food system.

There isn't enough.

Farmers are the foundation.

There aren't enough of them, and the ones we have are struggling.

Community is the power.

Most are disconnected and unaware of what a food system even is — sick, financially trapped, and increasingly dependent on systems they do not control.

Food service, restaurants, and schools are the pipeline infrastructure.

For the most part, they are not participating. Local food system participation remains negligible.

Politicians, lobbyists, land grants, and policy created the catastrophe, and it began many, many years ago.

Indoctrination and sweet promises caused buy-in. Heroes like Wendell Barry and Rachael Carson were bullied relentlessly. And if you don't know who they are… my point is made.

Earl Butz hailed as a hero, maybe with good intentions, but with disastrous effects.

The road to hell is said to be paved with good intentions.

A nation that cannot feed itself is not resilient.

It is dependent.

We are in trouble, and most can't see it yet. But make no mistake, everyone will be affected.

The good news is that the solution isn't complicated.

Support your farmers.

Support your makers.

Support your neighbors.

Whoever and wherever you are, invest in your local food system before you need it rather than after you lose it, because we are losing it.
