We are PROUD of you!! Congratulations to the HISD Middle School & High School students who competed at TSA (Technical Students Association) at Longview High School on Monday and Tuesday. For a small school, our students triumphed over the 4A and 5A schools in many events. Several of them (names with a *) will continue to State TSA in Fort Worth!

We have a lot of awesome projects ahead of us this year! One that is am particularly nerding-out on is a recycled plastic building blocks project. Students will be learning about the properties of different types of plastic and how to process their own recycled materials. Along the way they will need to design and build a shredder machine and an extrusion machine. They will also have to design and create their own blocks and building materials and the molds to go with them. Ought to be fun!

Students are trying to finish up some last minute projects!
Our CNC router is normally used for wood, but thanks to Blake Warren and his crew at Regal Machines, we get to mill up some aluminum for a certain end of the year project. Final pictures coming soon!

I apologize. As the school year picks up steam, I typically forget to take pictures and post them here. Here is a smattering of some of the things our students have been doing. They've designed mechanical devices to move thousand pound logs, used subtractive technologies to create signs, experimented with the chemical reactions involved in the mixing of epoxy resin, sheared metal plates, done some light welding, built digital and physical prototypes, built bridges, studied aerodynamics while designing CO2 cars, built and rebuilt robots, programmed microcontrollers, and done plenty of math along the way. When we give them a chance, they can get really creative with some of their designs! For every picture here, there are five more than I forgot to take. Sorry about that! But here is a small sample of what our students have been doing in the areas of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

It's too nice outside to work indoors!
Our final race day should be happening very soon. We will take our two best designs to our regional TSA competition Feb. 28 & Mar 1.
I rarely get to capture some video of our water jet machine in action. A group of students is working on a custom drone design. This is a motor mount bracket for it. Cut from aluminum.

We have had lots going in, and I haven’t been posting much. Finishing a rocking chair, picnic tables, and we have a coffee table in the works!

Our sawmill is set up and ready for students to start learning how to use it! If anyone has trees/logs they would like to donate, just let me know!

We have a sawmill arriving on Friday! Students will get to experience the process of how wood goes from tree to lumber. They will have to put it together first though 😝 More pictures to come!
