Farm school and foxes are awesome! The Haven Zoo is a special place for rescued animals and volunteers
09/12/2026
Community Works completed a MASSIVE project this week! The Haven Zoo is a beloved local attraction. The owner/operator is an anthropologist and has rescued over 200 animals in need: exotics, farm animals, cats and dogs. Last year the zoo began rescuing foxes that were destined to be euthanized—they were raised for the fur trade. Haven Zoo took in 13 foxes and last year also started a farm school for children. It is a real class where students study selected animals for 2 hours. Community Works 4Hart member Valerie Richardson donated pine combs for a feeder project for the foxes and chickens and Ellen Jones designed a lesson plan for this past Monday’s lesson. Susan Greger and Carol Mohor and the others helped JohnieSue with this week’s lesson: helping each student observe the foxes and learn how to tell each one apart. Ellen noted that she learned SO much about foxes and it was exciting to hear the different sounds that each one made. It was truly a unique experience for our volunteers!

Meal kits work best when you put in a note of encouragement

Our meal kits haven’t yet been delivered to St Andrew’s due to a construction project at the church but Community Works 4Hart will be ready for the next community meal!

Community Works 4 Hart has been silent lately… because we’ve been BUSY! We haven’t had time to post our August pictures but we supported the VFW and donated supplies to elementary school teachers in Hart County… and we forgot to take a picture. Our second project: we collected supplies for a young mother who left a domestic violence situation. We only took pictures of the supplies due to privacy concerns. We are going to check in with her during the year. We are proud of the courage she had to better her situation. Our 3rd project was to donate meal kits to St Andrew’s Episcopal Church. St. Andrew’s does a monthly community meal and last month, 100 families were served. We realized as we went along that meal kits allow the church to have more food on hand when demand is high. Meal kits consist of shelf stable ingredients plus a simple recipe so families in need will have something in their pantry.

St Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Hartwell beat us to the pictures for our July project CPR with Mary Hudgins 😂, so here are a few more we took last night. Such a fun and informative class! Thank you Mary and St Andrew’s!

Last night Community Works partnered with Mary Price Hudgins and St Andrew’s Episcopal Church of Hartwell to put on a CPR class. We hope to host more events at St Andrew’s for more of Mary’s classes.

Our second April project was a trash pick up on Elizabeth Road. It’s a busy street with speeding cars and littering is a problem. We learned that 80 year olds have been trying to pick up the trash and their neighbors are afraid for their safety! With 2 projects in the bag for April, our Community Works volunteers were willing to take the risks 😂. We learned many things about our speeders/litterers: they appreciate a good mini bottle. Is this drinking responsibly? Okay probably not 😂. Lucky strike ci******es were popular. Fast food! Hart County we may need to work on our diets/lifestyles.
