š„ Why Running Matters for Fighting
Running isnāt just about being able to run farther. Itās about building aerobic capacity, your ability to take in, transport, and use oxygen to produce energy.
In a fight, a strong aerobic system helps you recover between exchanges, clear fatigue, maintain your pace, and keep producing effort as the rounds go on. The better your aerobic engine, the faster you can recover after hard bursts. Itās the first of the 3 energy systems that should be built.
Your body relies on three energy systems:
š¢ Aerobic (oxidative): Uses oxygen to produce energy. Dominates longer-duration work and helps you recover between hard efforts.
š“ Anaerobic glycolytic: Produces energy quickly without relying directly on oxygen. Important during hard efforts lasting roughly 10 seconds to a couple of minutes, but it produces fatigue-inducing byproducts.
š” ATP-PC (phosphagen): The fastest energy system. Powers explosive efforts like punches, takedowns, jumps, and short sprintsāroughly the first few seconds of maximal work.
The key is that all three systems work together. Fighting is a repeated cycle of explosive bursts, hard exchanges, movement, and recovery.
šāāļø Running builds the aerobic engine that helps you recover from the anaerobic work which is why it should be built first and that can also make a huge difference when the fight goes deep.
Sometimes the biggest lessons come from the moments that humble you.
We stepped into the highest-level tournament a few weeks ago to test ourselves, and it showed us exactly what the next level demands.
It wasnāt the result we wanted, but it was the litmus test we needed.
Our kids program is built around real-world self-defense, not just rules in a specific skillset but the pushing, grabbing, headlocks, bear hugs, and everyday bullying situations kids actually face on a day to day basis.
That approach has served us well, but now we know where we need to grow. We did well dedicating a portion of the class to Muay Thai. But these tournaments demand more.
So weāre giving the kids that want to compete an avenue to do so!
Starting Sept 29th
Tuesdays & Thursdays
5:40ā6:30 PM
will now be our Comp Team / Striking Only as well as Invite only classes.
Green belts and higher in both kids and youth class are preliminarily invited but the final say is how you perform in the other classes.
Higher standards. More details. Bigger expectations.
Weāre not discouraged. Weāre motivated.
āSometimes what we think are two steps backwards turn out to be the footing we need to drive further into the next level.ā
- someone smarter then me lol
Thereās just something healing about a heavy, double-end, or speed bag when life gets to be a little much.
You can walk in carrying stress, frustration, anger, sadness or a thousand invasive thoughts running through your head⦠and for a little while, itās just you, the bag, your breath, and every punch or kick.
Boxing or Muay Thai doesnāt make the problems disappear, but it can help quiet the noise.
You move your body, burn off that built-up tension, get your heart rate going, and somehow walk away feeling a little lighter.
Sometimes you donāt need to talk it out. Sometimes you just need to put your mind somewhere else for a time so you can come back with a new sense or purpose to tackle the problems of the day.
Just hit the bag and breathe. š„š„

š„ BE A WELL-ROUNDED FIGHTER.
One of the biggest mistakes in martial arts is becoming too comfortable in one area.
A great striker who understands distance, angles, and good footwork is a completely different problem than a stationary striker.
You canāt just assume youāre going to close the distance, shoot a takedown, or pressure them into a corner. Someone who moves well makes you work for every exchange.
But the same principle applies everywhere.
A Striker can have incredible hands, timing, head movement, and combinations, but put them on the ground for the first time and suddenly the rules change.
If theyāve never experienced grappling, positional pressure, takedowns, or what it feels like to fight from their back, theyāre navigating an entirely different world.
The same goes for a grappler who has never had to deal with someone who can strike, I mean GENUINELY strike.
Thatās why being a well-rounded martial artist is pretty imperative.
You donāt have to be the best striker in the room.
You donāt have to be the best grappler in the room.
But you should be capable everywhere.
Learn to strike.
Learn to wrestle.
Learn to grapple.
Learn to move.
Learn to control distance.
Learn what it feels like to be uncomfortable.
Cross-training doesnāt take away from your specialty, it makes your specialty more effective.
The goal isnāt to have one weapon.
The goal is to become the kind of fighter who can adapt when the fight changes.
š„ Fight standing.
𤼠Fight in the clinch.
š„ Fight on the ground.
š§ Most importantly, learn to think and adapt.
Be well-rounded. Be difficult to solve.
š„ Why Run on a Treadmill When You Can Train Like a Fighter? š„
Letās be honest⦠staring at a wall while running on a treadmill for 30 minutes isnāt exactly thrilling. š“
Combat sports training? Completely different story.
Youāre getting your cardio, strength, coordination, agility, balance, reaction time, and mental toughness, all while learning an actual skill set you can take with you for life.
Instead of counting down the minutes until your workout is over, youāre throwing combinations, hitting pads, moving, defending, and constantly learning something new.
The treadmill gives you cardio. Combat sports give you cardio + skills + confidence + a workout that NEVER feels the same.
So if youāre bored with your gym cardio routine, maybe itās time to stop running in place⦠and start fighting your way into shape. š„šÆ

We also had two of our youth competitors do the WKA Nationals in Bel Air, Maryland over the weekend. Although they both lost their respected decisions, I couldnāt have been more proud of their grit and heart, especially with doing such a high-level tournament their first time!
Back to the drawing board with these guys. We will revamp their training to be able to compete on this level and get them where they deserve to be! This is the next level for them! Itās a puzzle we keep fine tuning the higher we go.
Next time, We will be there on scene, lean and mean! š
