From a 20-year home to sleeping under a bridge. 💔🏠
It is a terrifying reality of the housing crisis: many of our neighbors are just one sudden rent hike away from losing everything they’ve ever known.
For over twenty years, mom (an elderly mother who speaks broken English) and her daughter (who is in her 50s and nonverbal due to developmental disabilities) lived stably in the same apartment. It was their sanctuary.
But when a new landlord raised their rent by a staggering 200% to pay for building improvements, the home they cherished was suddenly out of reach. They were evicted, forced to bounce from shelter to shelter, and eventually found themselves surviving under a bridge.
When they finally came to Serve City, our team didn't just see a crisis to manage, we saw a family whose dignity needed to be protected and restored.
They stabilized in our emergency shelter for four weeks, saved their money, and transitioned into our 9th Street Apartments Transitional Housing Program. But the real work took eight months of relentless patience, prayer, and intentional relationship-building by our case managers. Mom was fiercely independent and initially refused help. Our frontline staff refused to walk away.
Because of that trust, we connected them to the "Bridges" Rapid Rehousing program. And this week? Mom and Daughter moved into their very own independent apartment! 🎉🔑
We just posted their full story on our blog. It perfectly illustrates why the fight against housing instability in Butler County requires far more than just a temporary bed...it requires time, deep empathy, and a community network where every single link matters.

✨ COMMUNITY HEROES: YOU STEPPED INTO THE GAP! ✨
We are absolutely blown away by the incredible response to our urgent call for laundry soap! Because of your overwhelming generosity, our shelves are no longer empty, our machines are running, and we can continue providing free laundry facilities to our neighbors experiencing homelessness. Please keep the detergent flowing!
It takes an entire community coming together to create lasting change, and you proved once again that when there is a need, this community answers the call.
Serving our neighbors experiencing homelessness isn't a mission we can do alone. It truly takes every single one of us linking arms to provide comfort, dignity, and care.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for stepping into the gap and being the hands and feet of help and hope. We are so incredibly grateful for you! 🩵

Success isn’t measured by the number of beds we fill. It’s measured by the lives that are restored. 💙✨
If you want to know what true impact looks like in human terms, you only have to look at the front doors of Serve City and meet our incredible Program Coordinator, Jennifer Kendel.
Today, Jennifer is a driving force on our team and helps to guide our frontline programs. But her journey with Serve City didn't start in an office. Years ago, it started in a place of grief, depression, and couch surfing.
When a sudden housing crisis left her family completely homeless, Jennifer and her twin babies were placed in one shelter while her partner was sent to Serve City. They were fractured, exhausted, and holding on by a thread.
Jennifer’s story didn't end there. An opportunity to start volunteering at a local food pantry became the spark that restored her dignity, renewed her hope, and completely transformed her trajectory. She realized she wasn't just capable of surviving...she was built to lead.
Now, when Jennifer looks at the folks sleeping in our shelter, she doesn't see numbers or case files. She sees herself.
We just published a deep dive into Jennifer's beautiful full-circle journey, and it perfectly highlights why our frontline staff are the heartbeat of the fight to end housing instability in Butler County.
Take a few minutes today to read a story that proves transformation is entirely possible when a community chooses to invest in a person's worth, not just manage their crisis.

The True Measure of Success: Jennifer’s Journey from Couch Surfing to Hope Dealer When we talk about the fight against homelessness, it is incredibly easy to get caught up in data points. We count the number of beds filled, the number of meals served, or the total square footage of a facility. But at Serve City, we have learned that those metrics don’t tell the full story.Succes...

Community Heroes, we need your help! 🦸♂️🦸♀️
At Serve City, we believe that dignity starts with the basics. That’s why we offer free laundry facilities for our neighbors experiencing homelessness..giving them a chance to clean their clothes, feel refreshed, and take a positive step forward to restore their dignity.
But right now, **our shelves are completely empty**, and we can’t run our machines without you. 🧼🧺
We rely entirely on the generosity of our community to keep these essential cleaning supplies stocked. If you're able to help, please consider donating laundry detergent (liquid, powder, or pods) to our shelter.
