Thank you to State Senator Martin Looney for his remarkable 46 years of service in the Connecticut House and Senate. Driven by principle and a strong belief in the ability of government to improve people’s lives, Senator Looney accomplished a great deal for Hamden, New Haven, and the entire state, and in doing so set the standard for public service in elected office. I want to offer my deep and sincere gratitude to Marty for all he has done and continues to do for the residents of Hamden, congratulate him on an amazing 46 years, and wish him well in his retirement.

Storm update…

Hello Everyone- This is Mayor Adam Sendroff with a storm update.

Thank you for staying off the roads during the storm. We got through this storm without any major incidents and I appreciate everyone doing their part on behalf of public safety.

On Tuesday:
- Hamden Public Schools will have a two hour delay.

- Town offices will open at their normal time.

- The Transfer Station will be closed.

The parking ban will remain in effect until further notice.

Plowing operations remain ongoing. There is a massive amount of snow from this storm and clean-up will take time. Thank you for your patience. Residents and landscapers- your cooperation is particularly appreciated in keeping snow out of the street, as it creates a safety hazard.

Bitterly cold temperatures will remain, and the Governor has extended the Severe Cold Weather Protocol until February 5th. Please call 211 if you are in need of cold weather resources.

As a reminder, trash and recycling pick-up will be delayed a day this week.

The overnight winter warming center at the Keefe Community Center will remain open 24 hours until noon on Wednesday, then will revert to its normal 7:00pm to 7:00am schedule.

If you are experiencing an emergency, please call 911.

I’d like to extend my gratitude to Hamden Public Works and Parks, Police, and Fire for all of their efforts to keep us safe during this challenging storm and its aftermath.

Today we celebrate the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Unfortunately, inclement weather forced the cancelation of yesterday's MLK Day event organized by the Hamden Black History Committee. There, I was planning on sharing the following personal story behind the notecard in the photo.

When Dr. King’s life was tragically cut short, my parents sent a condolence card to the King family. A few months later, they received this card in the mail. The envelope is postmarked August 1st, 1968, Atlanta, Georgia. It reads, in five short lines:

Mrs. Martin Luther King Jr.
and children
deeply appreciate and gratefully
acknowledge your kind expression
of sympathy

This tangible link to history was kept in a special place in my house. Through the reverence my parents had for it, I learned about the impact and example of Dr. King and the ongoing quest for justice in America. It helped inform my values and worldview as I grew up, influenced by Dr. King’s leadership, oratory, and writing.

On the face of it, this card is sad. It’s about loss. Loss for a family, and loss for our nation. But I also find it uplifting because it is a constant reminder of Dr. King’s life and what he accomplished. It makes me think of the potential of political and social change through non-violence. It makes me think of how activism can lead to momentous legislative victories like the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. It gives me hope, and we need that kind of hope now.

I keep this card in the Mayor’s Office now, where it is a constant reminder to me of Dr. King’s message of equality, justice, fairness, non-violence, and love.

If you can avoid driving tonight, stay home and stay safe, and know our hard-working Public Works Employees are on the job clearing the streets. Tonight I went on a ride-along and learned a lot about what goes into plowing our streets during a snowstorm.

Meg Nowacki was a remarkable person and citizen, and I am saddened by the news of her passing. I first got to work with Meg on the PTA Council. She attended every Legislative Council and Board of Education meeting for decades, and always spoke up for what she believed in. Bearing witness to local government as she did, Meg was the most informed person in town. In these days of media consolidation and cut-backs, it is incredibly important to have citizens like Meg. A proud moment of mine was presenting Meg with the BOE Hamden Hero award in 2017. This was just one of many awards and accolades she received. Meg Nowacki made Hamden a better place. My condolences to her family.

Fortunate to attend some great events this weekend: the inauguration of Bethany First-Selectman Carol Goldberg, the Shepherd Glen Winter Wonderland Celebration, Quinnipiac University President Marie Hardin’s holiday party, and the inauguration of West Haven Mayor Dorinda Borer.

One of the highlights of my first week was the Fire Department’s Chili Cookoff on Friday. Congratulations to Fire Station 2 on their victory! I let these Firefighters know that my administration is focused on a new Fire Station 2, which was a big topic of meetings this week, including with members of our State Delegation. Friday morning, we submitted a Community Investment Fund application. If approved, the funds would help with its construction.
