When I moved to Hawaii in January 2020, my life was far from Normal. Far away from my hometown of Normal, Illinois and far from anything I would have considered to be a part of my Normal life. I was overwhelmed. So I picked macramé. As I knotted, the repetition was comforting. I loved the motions of creating different knots, and loved how I could plan for them to flow into each other and create a pattern. Each knot was a part of the bigger picture.
As we entered into COVID19, we all were asking: When is everything going to go back to Normal?
This time to pause, to reflect, to sit with ourselves, has offered a unique opportunity for me to question if I even want to go back to Normal.
I believe, what we need is to each decide to be Not Normal. To not fall into our old, mindless routines. To stand up for the injustices in the world.To live a life that is honest and true to ourselves. To be brave, authentic, and unapologetically loving to ourselves and to others. Not to be Normal, but to be true.

This is my art. This is me embracing my brave and my true.
