Today is a day of remembrance, gratitude, and celebration. While our nation observes Juneteenth, our family also celebrates a very special birthday in Heaven. Today would have been my Dad’s 102nd birthday.
I am deeply honored to carry the name of Louis Albert Schopfer Sr. and even more honored to carry forward the legacy of faith, service, education, music, and love that he lived every day.
Dad was a gifted musician who began serving as a church organist at just 12 years old. A proud graduate of Northeast High School’s Class of 1942, he graduated six months early, never imagining that he would soon be called to serve his country in World War II. As a Technical Sergeant, he served in the South Pacific and participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, helping secure freedom for future generations.
After returning home, he completed both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Temple University and devoted his life to shaping young minds. From band director at Paulsboro High School to teacher, administrator, and principal in the Haddon Heights School District, he invested countless hours encouraging students to reach their potential.
His greatest passion, however, was serving the Lord through music. For decades, he faithfully served as Organist and Choir Director at First United Methodist Church in Haddon Heights and St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Paulsboro, leading worship and helping generations draw closer to Christ.
Dad loved his family deeply, cherished his beloved wife Ruth, served his community faithfully, and lived a life that reflected God’s grace. On March 14, 2006, he was called home to the loving arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Though we miss him every day, we rejoice knowing that he is singing in Heaven’s choir and worshiping before the throne of God.
Happy 102nd Birthday in Heaven, Dad. Thank you for your example, your faith, your music, your service, and your love. Your legacy continues to inspire all who knew you, and I thank God for the privilege of being your son and bearing your name.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23
Memories

Thirty years ago today, I experienced one of the greatest honors of my life—carrying the Olympic Torch for the 1996 Olympic Games across the iconic Trenton Makes Bridge.
It was an unforgettable moment filled with excitement, pride, and the spirit of the Olympic movement. As special as carrying the torch was, what made the day truly priceless was sharing it with my Dad. The memories of that day, the cheering crowds, the Olympic flame, and the time spent together will always hold a cherished place in my heart.
Thirty years later, I remain grateful for the opportunity and the memories that continue to burn brightly, just like the flame itself.

Still living in the afterglow of yesterday’s Essence of Harmony Choral Society Concert at Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Moorestown, NJ. What a beautiful gift to witness this group of musicians share their voices, spirit, and unity so powerfully. Your artistry and harmony left a lasting impression, and I’m deeply grateful for the experience.
