Bob Weir died last weekend, at 78, “even though I thought he was immortal,” Alec Wilkinson writes. “He had the nature of a polite and well-meaning cowboy, and a shy and understated charisma and grace. More than once, over the years, it occurred to me that he was the holy fool of the Grateful Dead. ”

Wilkinson first came to know Weir 35 years ago, when he was writing a story for Talk of the Town about a children’s book that he and his sister, Wendy, had written.
