In 2020, Mexico πŸ‡²πŸ‡½ enacted a law requiring warning labels πŸ›‘ on the front of food packages that contain β€œexcess” sugar 🍭 , calories 🍩, sodium πŸ§‚, or saturated fat 🧈 by Official Mexican Standards.
Over 35 percent of children πŸ‘ΆπŸ½πŸ‘§πŸ½ and adolescents in Mexico are overweight, one of the highest rates in the Americas. 😳
The consumption of these products is reported as reduced, but there has not been a significant decrease in sales. πŸ˜‘
Despite inconclusive results, several companies (especially soft drinks πŸ₯€ and dairy πŸ₯› companies) have modified the formulas of some products to reduce the risk amounts. πŸŽ‰

This is Dr. Guerrier, one of the Bariatric Surgeons I work with. Our hospital is dedicated to healthcare equity and minority providers πŸ‘©πŸ½β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΎβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸΎβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸΏβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΎβ€βš•οΈ have been shown to improve patient outcomes.
Only about 1/4 of Bariatric surgeries are performed on Black or Hispanic patients even though obesity rates are highest in this population. 😯😯 (About 45% of each group suffer from obesity, and ~70% are considered overweight and obese).
The literature has shown that minority patients are more likely to engage with minority providers, and more likely to consent to preventive services. πŸ™ŒπŸ½πŸ™ŒπŸΎπŸ™ŒπŸΏ Unfortunately only 14% of physicians are Black or Hispanic, and that number drops to 8% in surgery. Proud to have a diverse team to care for our patients. πŸ‘¨πŸ»β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΌβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸ½β€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΎβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘¨πŸΏβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸ»β€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸΌβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸ½β€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸΎβ€βš•οΈπŸ‘©πŸΏβ€βš•οΈ
Our hospital πŸ₯ Hackensack University Medical Center, was also the first 1️⃣ hospital in the nation to receive a Health Care Equity certification πŸ… for its commitment to improving health equity πŸ‘πŸ»πŸ‘πŸΌπŸ‘πŸ½πŸ‘πŸΎπŸ‘πŸΏ from the Joint Commission (a nonprofit organization that sets standards and certifies health care programs). Kudos to the entire HUMC family! 🌟
