On Tuesday, June 16th, students from Effingham and Chatham enjoyed a field trip to Honey Ridge Agricenter with the Georgia Tech CEISMC AI on Land and Sea Summer Program. Led by Ms. Lesa Hagins the GaTech CEISMC Educational Outreach Manager, the students toured the farm and got to experience “Farming with Big Data”. They learned about the sensors that were deployed by ECCA’s Computer Science students in conjunction with Georgia Tech to monitor real time data on weather, air quality and soil temperature. They used the devices that they programmed the day before to gather more data as they explored.

One of the many ways our ECSD Farm is a benefit for student learning! We love our Computer Science Teachers and Students along with our friends from Georgia Tech for their innovative techniques deployed at Honey Ridge Agricenter to support student learning! These sensors can provide real time data for access in classrooms or any where. We can monitor rainfall, air quality, soil temperature and beyond.

“The Infamous 508”, AKA “Thor” from Honey Ridge Agricenter, is living his best life right now! His new owner is giving him the royal treatment everyday and he loves it! He was spoiled at Honey Ridge though as he was Mr. Erik’s baby!

Bailey Murrell, for her Eagle Scout Project, made and donated six 8 foot picnic tables to HRA. Three were placed over by the cook-shed and three were placed at the Hereford House. She is in 10th grade at ECHS. Dr. Brophy was one of her mentors. Thank you Bailey!

We were thrilled to share with the Superintendent’s Parent Advisory panel ECSD’s beautiful farm, how unique an opportunity it is for our district to own it, as well as the impact it has on many students throughout the district. Activities that take place on the farm are student-centered and allow for real-world, hands-on, agricultural-based learning.
