Quick myth-bust: reverse thrust isn't the primary way an airliner stops. Wheel brakes do the heavy lifting; reverse is a supplementary tool, most useful in the first few seconds after touchdown when ground speed is still high and it can shed a lot of energy before the brakes take the full heat load.
On most high-bypass turbofans — which power the majority of today's airliners — this is handled by a cascade-type thrust reverser. Rather than redirecting the hot core exhaust, it primarily acts on the cold bypass air coming off the fan. After touchdown, the pilot brings the thrust levers into reverse, a translating sleeve slides aft, and cascade vanes are exposed along the sides of the nacelle. Blocker doors simultaneously seal off the normal bypass exit path, forcing that fan air out through the vanes, angled forward and outward to generate a deceleration force.
Worth noting: the core exhaust is still being directed aft through this whole sequence, so "reverse thrust" is a bit of a misnomer — it's less “full thrust reversal” and more “forward thrust reduction plus a forward-vectored airflow assist.” Older and low-bypass designs work differently; some use bucket or target-type doors that physically swing into the exhaust path to deflect it forward instead.
Reverse thrust also has a shelf life on the runway. As speed drops, it loses effectiveness and starts kicking up dust, water, and debris that can risk engine ingestion — which is why most operators reduce to idle and stow it well before reaching taxi speed.

Happy Father's Day from EFS!

Some of our favorite moments at EFS are the father-son flights.
Dad and one of his kids take the captain's and first officer's seats side by side, with a Flight Coach riding along as co-pilot — no aviation experience required. After a quick briefing on the Boeing 737 NG, they start the engines, take off, and fly together, with a few landings along the way.

Nearly half of all pilots say a family member was the reason they got into flying in the first place. Dig into pilot interviews and memoirs, and one pattern shows up again and again: the family member is usually dad.
Sometimes it's one unforgettable afternoon. A T-6 instructor pilot still remembers standing at an air show as a kid, watching the Thunderbirds, when his dad told him those maneuvers were the same ones he flew every day. That was it — he told everyone from that point on he was going to be a pilot.
