Did you know that Mother’s Day in the United States has roots in a call for peace and community healing?
In 1870, author and activist Julia Ward Howe issued what became known as the “Mother’s Day Proclamation,” urging women to come together across differences and nationalities to promote peace following the devastation of war.
More than 150 years later, her message about compassion, community, and our shared humanity still resonates.
This Mother’s Day, we recognize and celebrate all those who nurture, support, guide, and care for others in our families and communities.
Happy Mother’s Day from the Guilford Human Rights Commission.
