We celebrate Dr. Penny Borenstein this , whose incredible four-decade career was recently highlighted by the Tribune after she announced her retirement.

From discovering her passion for public health in medical school to leading Baltimore’s health department for 20 years and serving San Luis Obispo County for 18 years, Dr. Borenstein has made a lasting impact on countless lives across many communities. She helped guide us through some of our most challenging moments—including COVID-19—with a steady focus on transparency, compassion, and community partnerships.

She’s also been reflecting about how the pandemic changed public trust, and how important it is for public health leaders to communicate clearly and stay grounded in science.

As she steps into retirement, her message is a meaningful one: there is still important work ahead—especially when it comes to mental health, addiction, and the realities many in our community face behind the scenes.
