Helen III
Fishing Charters for Groups of 1-15. Striped bass, blues, fluke, tautog, scup, sea bass, porgies.
Charlie’s group threw back a lot of big fish today but Don had the biggest. Nice 46” striper safely released to its home!
Whether it’s too big or not is still up for debate. A couple great fish, a great group, and great weather to kick off our 2026 season! Fishing was a grind today but these guys fished hard to bring home some filets.

This years tournament was a huge success! We fished through some tough conditions Monday. The guys did a great job putting the effort in. Caught a lot of fish, a bunch in the 5lb range. Alfonso was the first day big winner. Biggest fish for the day, biggest bag limit for the day and biggest team bag Calcutta. Bringing home $$$$!
Today had great conditions early allowing us to hit some deep bottom we haven’t been able to yet this year. The bite was hot. One small spot produced 20 good fish and the biggest fish of the tournament. Today’s and the overall big winner was Steve! He had 2nd and 1st biggest fish today and biggest fish overall. Alfonso had 2nd biggest fish overall. Individual bag limit went to Steve. The team bag today and total was split between those who bought those teams; Carey, Stewie and Steve took home $590 each for that prize alone. Overall big money winner was Steve! BANK! Thank you to everyone who competed and to all who fish and follow us. We appreciate each of you and thank you for another great year!

First drop had good action. We were able to fill the community fish quickly. Tagged a bunch of healthy fish. First payout, $100, goes to Alfonso for 1st keeper in the boat!
Here are the Captain’s write ups and Odds for this year’s tournament. The weather is ok tomorrow and expected to be excellent on Tuesday. We are planning on hitting some special spots either one or both days depending on conditions. Should be a lot of positioning, posturing, ball busting and most of all FUN!
11: Kevin “Bush Latte” Odds 20:1
This is his first time in the tournament. If Bush Latte could fish half as good as his sister, he might have a shot. He gets super excited to hook a fish, jumps around like a Jerry Lewis movie then has another Bush. Just a strange situation there. He likes to fish the stern. If he doesn’t get the stern positon I’m not sure what he will do.
10: Danny “Jabbers” Odds 14:1
Jabber is a first timer in the tournament and, by far, the contestant with the most character. Danny talks a lot. I mean a lottttttttttt. He is a spotty fisherman. Sometimes he is on sometimes he isn’t. He now, after coaching, has excellent gear. He will have to pull it together and focus. If he can, he might be a long shot.
9: Eric “Glam Boy” Odds 13:1
Eric, what is there to say? He can actually fish once in a while but there are issues. Buys expensive tackle but, is right handed and uses a left hand reel. He says “I like to pull on my pole with my right hand”. I can’t give good odds to a guy who is confused about what activity he is doing at any given time.
8: Joe “Shorty” Odds 12:1
Shorty is awesome but has been on a little bit of a slump as of late. Last year he spent most of the time with is hand in the cookie jar, the actual cookie jar. He was chewing more than a school full of togs on a pile of hermit crabs. He needs to pull it together.
7: Hal “Rod Master” 10:1
The oldest competitor, Hal is one of the quiet guys in the group. He builds an excellent rod. Has great equipment. He has been fishing for years on boats throughout CT and NY and is a regular of our good friend Richie Jenson in Orient. If he fishes with Richie, you know he has to be good. He is a nice guy -maybe too nice for this group. See how he holds his own, but a definite person to watch.
6: Alfonso “Uncle Fester” Odds 9:1
Fester is a previous champion. He is a good fisherman but this year has been “ok” but “ok” won’t cut it this week. If he can take a few tips from his brother Rob, who has been on fire this year, he could be a repeat winner.
5: Artur “Handpay” Odds 8:1
Handpay can appear to be a good black-fisherman. On his trips, he usually brings guys from the “island of misfit toys” on his trips to make himself look better. In this tournament, all the misfits can fish. He has never placed in the money. Time to put up, or keep donating.
4: Steve “Pasty Pescadore” Odds 7:1
Steve has been in the tournament for few years now but yet to place in the money. He has caught several nice fish so far this year. Good rail position is a must for Steve. Anywhere besides next to Jabbers and he could win. If the wind blows, this gap toothed, Michael Strahan look-a-like acts as a whistle buoy.
3: Carey “Gentle Giant” 6:1
Kerry is one of the true gentlemen on this trip. A past champion, he always has a shot. He has been somewhat lackluster so far this year but has the skills to pull it together at any point. He has a strange skill to find the odd snacks. Like habanero-lime-and butterfly flavored brownies. Not sure where he shops but maybe they has some green crab flavor Lucky Charms he can get for extra luck.
2: Gerard “Mrs Doubtfire” Odds 5:1
Last year’s champion, Mrs Doubtfire could repeat. That is a tall task that has only happened once in the history of the tournament. He has become a full time amateur fisherman. Fishing everywhere and all the time. He is getting pretty good. Rail position is a must. If he can keep is nose out of the Little Debbie box he might do it.
1: Danny “Stewie” Odds 3:1
Stewie has been in the money several times in this tournament but yet to win. I think it’s just a matter of time. He just needs to look around, with his head, he could take out half the competition with one rotation.
Comment who you think will take home this year’s title and be the next “Helen III Grand Champion!”
11/23/2025
It’s that time of year! Our 6th annual high stakes blackfish tournament is this Monday and Tuesday. Some new faces, some repeats. It is with regret that the two time grand champion “Jose” can not compete this year do to a last minute family matter. We are all thinking of you and wish you the best.
Write ups and odds to be posted later tonight!
