Preparedness: A Daily Responsibility
Preparedness is not about living in fear—it is about being ready to protect ourselves, our families, and our communities when unexpected situations arise. Whether facing severe weather, emergencies, or everyday safety concerns, having a plan and staying aware of your surroundings are essential components of preparedness.
Emergency management professionals emphasize that true preparedness goes beyond simply having supplies. It is about creating a culture of readiness. In a major emergency, assistance may not be immediately available and could take 7 to 10 days to reach some areas. This reality highlights the importance of planning ahead, understanding potential risks, and ensuring that you and your family can be self-sufficient if necessary.
Preparedness includes:
* Staying informed and aware of changing situations.
* Developing emergency plans for your household and workplace.
* Maintaining emergency supplies and kits.
* Using notification and alert systems to receive timely information.
One important tool available to support preparedness efforts is **CivicReady**. Residents are encouraged to register for this notification service to receive emergency alerts and important community information.
Ultimately, preparedness is a shared responsibility. Whether leading a family, a team, or an organization, building a culture of readiness helps ensure everyone is better equipped to respond to the unexpected. The key question for all of us is: **Are we doing enough today to be ready for tomorrow?**
