Why does DKIM fail when email signatures or relays modify messages?

Because DKIM checks whether the message changed after it was sent. If a message is DKIM-signed by Microsoft 365 or Google and then modified by a downstream system, like an email signature service or relay, the signature may no longer validate. Even small changes to the message content can cause DKIM to fail.

This usually comes down to how the mail flow is configured, not a problem with DKIM itself.

When Insider covered the AI security conversation at ChannelCon 2026, one of the voices they turned to on email was Mailprotector founder and CEO David Setzer.
