Divine Timber Frames

Since our house is a disaster, Merry Christmas from this client's home to yours!

We wrapped up the reclaimed timber frame porches on this house and Stoll & Sons took over the stick framing. They had it enclosed very quickly and did a great job. Our work is done so we're looking forward to seeing some updates.

Last week's barn raising in southern Indiana went about as well as it possibly could have. We raised this frame in 6 hours. Big thanks to Fred Buckingham, Ethan Adams and Jeff Wagner for helping me pull it off. This old frame will be the centerpiece of a larger house. We'll be back down in a few weeks to start installing porches.

I refer to our most recent timber frame build as the "Beemer Frame", because it was based on the late Will Beemer's design. Will was the founder of the Heartwood Timber Framing School in Massachusetts that I attended 3 years ago. We made some significant changes, most notably using massive reclaimed hand hewn timbers. A lot of character is packed into this little frame. We raised it last week and disassembled it this week. Now it's tucked away in storage until it finds a new home.

Over the winter we designed and built this 20'x27 timber frame with a loft. It may be a tiny home, but the reclaimed beams are massive and the high ceilings make it feel wide open (it also helps that there are currently no walls or ceiling....gotta love some fresh air). Check it out!

It's been a while since we've posted anything, but between naps we've been keeping busy. Over the past year our business has transitioned from selling reclaimed barn materials, to re-erecting old barns and timber framing. Bringing an old barn back to it's former glory is a much more rewarding endeavor, so that's the path we'll be taking. A couple weeks ago we raised this 46x80 barn frame 11 miles from it's original location, where it'll hopefully stand for a couple hundred more years. While is was a little tricky to take this barn apart and get this one bent to stand on its own without falling down (out of necessity, I only have 1 telehandler), it says a lot about the craftsmanship of these old barns. Built 150 years ago and still standing down to the very end.
