The University of Northern Colorado Army ROTC is dedicated to the development of students as leaders

The University of Northern Colorado Army ROTC program is a satellite program with Colorado State University. Classes are held on Tuesday and Thursday with a Leadership Lab held on Thursday afternoons. Once every semester both schools participate in a Field Training Exercise which is a culmination of what the cadets have learned that year. Listed below is the curriculum for ROTC

Military Science

I year (MSI):
This year serves as the cadets’ first introduction to the Army. Topics covered include military customs and courtesy, military history, basic first aid, basic rifle marksmanship, basic hand gr***de use, land navigation, rappelling, fundamentals of leadership, map orienteering, field training, and drill and ceremony. Military Science II year (MSII):
The second year is an expansion of the topics taught in the first year of the program. Cadets are introduced to tactics, troop leading procedures, basics of operations orders, and ethics. Advanced Course
Military Science III year (MSIII):
The third year marks the beginning of the Advanced Course. This is where most cadets must contract with the Army to continue in the program. Cadets may be eligible for the Advanced Course if the following criteria are met:
-The cadet has prior military service OR
-The cadet has completed the first two years of the program OR
-The cadet has graduated the Leaders Training Course at Ft. Knox, KY AND
-The cadet has completed 54 credits (at least 60 preferred) of college coursework. The course sequence in this year is mainly focused on the application of leadership and small-unit tactics. Cadets are assigned rotating leadership positions within the School Battalion and are evaluated on their performance and leadership abilities while in those positions. Third-year cadets practice briefing operations orders, executing small-unit tactics, leading and participating in physical training, and preparing for successful performance at the four week Leader Development and Assessment Course during the summer following the third year. Under current regulations, attendance at the course is mandatory (in the past, Ranger School was offered as an alternative to select cadets).

Crawl-Phase of platoon-level field operations COMPLETE. Junior-level Cadets will LEAD their Platoons independently from here on in order to achieve PROFICIENCY and CONFIDENCE through repeated LEADERSHIP experiences throughout the remainder of the semester, equipping to CRUSH Cadet Summer Training. We're stoked to see RAM TOUGH epitomized from here on out. Proud to be.

GEAR UP and get ready for SPRING 2023. The RAM BN is opening the gates this semester by inviting ALL interested CSU and UNC students to JOIN US for our first two TACTICAL labs of the semester. Jump in to face a challenge and have a blast during Week One for a tactical SQUAD COMPETITION, followed up in Week Two with TACTICAL RAPPELLING. Here's the logistics:

LAND NAVIGATION is FOUNDATIONAL to a mission accomplishment, and represents a dying skill-set within most civilians circles. Understanding how to calmly and precisely determine one's wherabouts and how to navigate terrain with intention are skills that not only keep Soldiers moving in the right direction, they are skills that hone the individual's self control, cognitive awareness, problem solving, and confidence. Our freshmen and sophomore Cadets did just that last week. These are skills that most individuals will never aquire.

AMBUSH Lab - As Fall ramps up, so do we. RAM BN Cadets continue to hone their LEADERSHIP capablities through ever-changing conditions. These Junior-level Cadets have been eager to face down these challenges, and their hard work is PAYING DIVIDENDS. Fall FTX (Field Training Exercise) COMPLETE. Cadets underwent and OVERCAME MULTIPLE challenges: Rappelling, a Confidence Course, Land Navigation (day and night), and SEVERAL tactical STXs (Situational Training Exercises) over this 3-day excursion. These various gauntlets were further enhanced by limited sleep, frigid morning temperatures, and the high altitude, mountainous environment. And yet, our Cadets DOMINATED these challenges in order to train to DEFEND our Nation's freedoms. This semesterly event embodies why we're Proud to Be.
