Mathison I Mathison Architects
Connecting People Through Inspiring Design.
At MMA, architecture and interiors are never treated as separate conversations.
When both are designed together from the start, each decision strengthens the next. Our teams collaborate closely throughout the process to create spaces that feel thoughtful, intuitive, and connected from the inside out. It’s this shared approach that helps us create environments that not only look beautiful, but truly support the people using them every day.

Together with Disability Advocates of Kent County’s Nicholette Driggs, MMA Principal Megan Feenstra Wall presented at the AIA Conference on Architecture & Design 2026 in San Diego. Their session, All In: Inclusive Design in Action, explored the transformation of a vacant high school into the world’s largest Special Olympics facility and a collaborative hub for nine disability-focused nonprofits. Attendees gained insight into strategies for integrating accessibility and inclusivity from the earliest stages of design, while discovering new approaches for creating adaptable, equitable spaces that support people of all abilities.

Across West Michigan and beyond, we're watching a wide range of projects take shape as we get into summer, from public libraries to custom homes, nonprofit spaces, schools, and state park facilities. After months (and often years) of conversations, sketches, coordination, and problem-solving, it's always exciting to see ideas begin to emerge from the ground and become real places for people.
Each project serves a different purpose, but they all share a common goal: creating spaces that support the people and communities who use them. We're grateful to work alongside incredible clients, partners, consultants, contractors, and communities who help bring these projects to life!

The reimagined Muskegon Museum Of Art was designed to feel more open, connected, and welcoming. Every part of the renovation focused on enhancing how visitors move through and experience the museum, while still honoring the character and history of the original building. Natural light, material warmth, and carefully framed moments throughout the space help create an environment that feels both inspiring and approachable.
If you haven’t visited recently, it’s worth experiencing in person!

We’re excited to celebrate the ribbon cutting for the new student housing project at Montcalm Community College
This project represents an important new chapter for MCC and its students by creating a place that supports campus life, connection, independence, and community. Designed around a unique village-style housing model, the new residence hall was thoughtfully planned to balance privacy and social interaction while helping students feel more connected to campus and each other.
From shared commons and study spaces to connections with the surrounding landscape and trail systems, every part of the project was shaped around the student experience and what it means to feel at home while learning and growing.
We’re grateful to collaborate with Montcalm Community College and the entire project team on a space that will welcome its first students in 2026. Looking forward to celebrating this milestone together!

We are honored to share that the Muskegon Museum of Art has received an AIA Michigan Building Award.
Working alongside Boston-based lead designer, Annum Architects, MMA partnered closely with the museum on a 26,000 SF expansion that doubled the size of the facility, creating new space for changing exhibits, education, collections storage, and enhanced visitor amenities.
Now complete, the transformed Muskegon Museum of Art stands as both a vibrant cultural landmark for Muskegon and a nationally recognized example of what a leading-edge institution can look like in a uniquely American mid-sized city.
Congratulations to the entire project team and everyone who helped bring this vision to life.

Some projects change the way you think about design. This was one of them.
Working with Special Olympics Michigan (SOMI) challenged our team to think beyond traditional ideas of accessibility and instead ask a deeper question: how can a space truly make everyone feel welcome, supported, and included?
What began as a vacant, fragmented school building became a bright, intuitive, and deeply collaborative environment shaped directly by athletes, families, staff, and the broader SOMI community. From tactile wayfinding and sensory-conscious design decisions to inclusive gathering spaces and thoughtful circulation, every part of the building was guided by real conversations and lived experiences.
One of the most meaningful parts of this process was realizing how much there was to learn. Inclusive design is not about checking a box—it’s about listening, adapting, and designing alongside the people who will use the space every day.
This project reminded us that architecture has the power to remove barriers, create dignity, and help people feel seen. We’re incredibly grateful to have been part of a project that means so much to so many.
Take a look inside the story behind the SOMI headquarters and the people who shaped it.
