We’re proud to celebrate HopeWest volunteer Joan, who was named this year’s BeaconFest Volunteer of the Year. She has been a dedicated HopeWest volunteer for more than 10 years, contributing a minimum of 400 hours each year in support of our mission.
Joan volunteers across the organization, supporting our administrative team, assisting with events, and spending time volunteering at our Heirlooms for Hospice store in Montrose.
“Whether I’m donating my time to Heirlooms or HopeWest, I know I’m helping my community. Receiving this award makes me feel so appreciated, I love what I do and getting this recognition from my community means so much,” Joan said.
Joan’s kindness and commitment to service makes a meaningful difference every day. We are deeply grateful for all she does to support our staff, patients and their families. Thank you, Joan, for the lasting impact you have had on the community.

“Our hope is that this fund provides comfort, practical support, and a reminder that no family should walk this journey alone."
Earlier this year, a local couple approached HopeWest with an idea after caring for a loved one out of state. During that time, a close friend offered them the use of her home near the hospice facility where their loved one, Carolyn, was receiving care. This experience showed them just how important a welcoming place to stay is when traveling to be with a loved one in hospice care.
“God placed it on our hearts to create Carolyn's House Fund after witnessing the generosity of a friend who cared for us during a difficult season. We wanted to extend that same compassion to others.”
The Carolyn’s House Fund helps to cover lodging for those traveling from out of town to be close to loved ones receiving care in the HopeWest Ferris Hospice Care Center.
In addition to providing lodging support, the couple also creates “welcome baskets” that include snacks, Bible verses, and a listing of local churches.
HopeWest and the many families who will benefit from the Carolyn’s House Fund are grateful to this couple. Motivated by their faith and the desire to serve others, this fund supports families during some of life's most challenging moments.

It’s PACE Awareness Month, so we asked our care teams one simple question:
What does PACE mean to you?
Nurses, dietitians, social workers, and more - they all play a part in making exceptional care possible.
Register for the HopeWest Calcutta for a Cause golf tournament to make a difference in the lives of local children and teens. Registration includes Saturday's Calcutta auction and dinner reception, Sunday breakfast, and a celebratory lunch and awards ceremony. All proceeds from this event support the HopeWest Kids program, a grief support program for children and teens.
Join our team as a pet therapy volunteer.
HopeWest is seeking additional certified pet therapy volunteers, especially those willing to visit patients in their homes throughout our communities. If you have a certified therapy dog, volunteering with HopeWest can be a meaningful way to bring comfort, companionship, and connection to patients and families during some of life’s most challenging moments.

Passion turned into purpose.
Legos are often a hobby only kids enjoy, is what Bambi thought when she was gifted her first set of Legos years ago. Her opinion quickly changed after completing her first set; what she thought was a one-time thing became an instant hobby. After completing the Star Wars series of Legos, Bambi discovered the botanical collection, and her love of gardening and Legos became one. Soon she had over 50 sets of Lego flowers without a place to go.
She knew if she wanted more, the completed sets needed to find a new home. Having a connection to HopeWest as a volunteer, she had the idea to donate them as patient gifts.
“HopeWest is so important to me, I volunteer at the gardens and the Heirlooms store. I really believe in the mission,” Bambi said. “If my donations put a smile on people’s faces, that’s the only thing I need to keep going.”
As a gardener, Bambi says she sees many flowers come and go, but being able to give people something that will last is what makes Legos so special to her.
Meet our HopeWest Kids grief counselors.
As we jump into the new school year, remember HopeWest Kids is here for your child. HopeWest Kids partners with schools to offer no-cost grief support groups during school hours for students who may benefit from extra care and connection. Groups offer age-appropriate activities led by professionals in a confidential and supportive space.
Counseling is open to any student, regardless of when the loss occurred. To learn more about this resource, please contact the counselor at your child’s school.
It is National Grief Awareness Day. Stop and take a moment to reflect as Kevin, one of our HopeWest Chaplains, talks to us about the unique and personal experience of grief’s journey and how best to talk to someone experiencing feelings of grief.
