A custom bathroom goes far beyond choosing beautiful tile.
It’s about designing the space around how you actually live. The layout, storage, lighting, shower design, materials, fixtures, and even the smallest details can all be tailored to create a space that functions better and feels like it belongs in your home.
When you’re building custom, even the bathroom gets to be uniquely yours.

A custom home should be designed around more than how you want it to look. It should be designed around how you want to live.
A climbing gym for the clients who want to train at home. A garage and wet room designed to make hosting friends and family easier. Even a yard specifically designed with four-legged family members in mind.
These are the details we love bringing to life. When you build custom, your hobbies, routines, priorities, and personality can become part of the design from the very beginning.
What unique feature would make it into your dream home?
Pop Quiz: Part 2! 🧠
We’re back with another round of questions that may not have much to do with custom homes, building science, or design…but they’re fun to know!

A home should be shaped by the people who live in it.
The Bookcliff Modern is a 3,000 sq. ft., 3-bedroom, 2-bath home designed for clients who brought years of living abroad and experiencing different styles of housing to the design table. They knew what worked for them, what didn’t, and what they wanted their forever home to become.
Every part of the design responds to that vision and the building site itself. Solar access, views, privacy, gardening space, and the natural landscape all influenced the layout. Inside and out, steel, wood, concrete, stone, and clean modern details come together to create a home that feels both intentional and completely personal.
That’s what custom design is really about: creating a home around the way you want to live.

Modern design can look incredible and make thoughtful use of sustainable materials.
This kitchen renovation was designed for a busy, growing family of five, bringing together durability, comfort, and a sleek modern aesthetic. Cork flooring adds warmth underfoot while complementing satin black cabinetry, teak wood details, brass hardware, custom concrete countertops, and a unique ribbon tile backsplash.
Every material and detail has a purpose, creating a kitchen that looks beautiful while working for the people who live in it every day.
It’s time for Pop Quiz: Part 1! 🧠
We spend plenty of time talking design, construction, and craftsmanship, so we figured we’d switch things up and have a little fun with lesser known facts.
How many did you get right? And which answer surprised you the most?

Storage can be about having more closets.. but really it's about putting the right storage in the right places. 🏠
In a custom home, storage should be strategic. Where do you drop your keys when you walk in? Where do the backpacks go? What needs to be within reach in the kitchen? Where do you store seasonal gear without sacrificing everyday space?
When we design a home, we think about how you’ll actually move through it and what you’ll need along the way. Thoughtful cabinetry, built-ins, hidden storage, mudrooms, pantries, and purpose-built spaces can reduce clutter while making the entire home function better.
Good storage gives everything a place. Great storage makes that place feel like it was always meant to be there.

There’s a difference between building a house and building a home that was designed specifically for you. 🏡
A custom home gives you the opportunity to think intentionally about how you live, how your home interacts with the land, how it performs, and the details that make it uniquely yours.
At RG Cowan Design Build, we believe great homes start with thoughtful design and a deep understanding of the people who will live in them.
