Long Range Rifles

What makes an ELR r***e different?

It’s more than a bigger cartridge.

A true extreme-long-range r***e is built as a complete system — balancing weight, barrel length, recoil management, optics, am******on consistency, stability and the shooter’s ability to observe impacts and make corrections at distance.

Our latest article breaks down what separates a purpose-built ELR r***e from a more conventional precision r***e, using actual builds from the LongRangeRi**es.com showroom.

Featured here: SCR 1776 Independence by Stratton Custom Ri**es — a 28.2 lb, 30-inch-barreled 7 Mega built for ELR and PRS competition.

HEAD-TO-HEAD | Which Hunting R***e Fits Your Needs?

Three hunting r***es. Three very different configurations. No winner here—the better r***e depends on what you need it to do.

Billet Precision Ri**es | LRR-BP-0002
6 Creedmoor • LS1 action • 19” CRB/Rem Varmint steel barrel • Bix’n Andy TacSport Pro-X trigger • AG Composite Adjustable Hunter stock • Suppressor ready

Inspired Gunworks | LRR-IG-0003
7mm Rem Mag • Impact Precision NBK action • Preferred Barrel Blanks carbon-fiber-wrapped Heavy Palma barrel • 1:8 twist • TriggerTech Special Curved trigger

Hague & Sons | LRR-HA-0002
22 Creedmoor • ARC Coup de Grace action • 22” Krieger Fluted M24 barrel • 1:8 twist • TriggerTech Special • Manners LRH stock • Area 419 Hellfire Match • Suppressor ready • 12 lbs. • 80gr Berger Fullbore at 3,200 fps

That’s what makes comparing r***es interesting. The Billet takes a compact 6 Creedmoor approach with a 19” steel barrel. Inspired Gunworks steps into the 7mm Rem Mag with a carbon-wrapped Heavy Palma barrel. Hague & Sons goes another direction with a 22 Creedmoor, 22” Krieger and a listed 3,200 fps with an 80gr Berger.

Different cartridges. Different components. Different approaches to building a hunting r***e.

R***E OF THE WEEK | HAGUE & SONS

This week’s featured r***e is the H&S Hunting R***e, a 6.5 PRC built by Hague & Sons around one objective: exceptional downrange performance in a purpose-built hunting r***e.

Built on a Lone Peak Fuzion action, it pairs a 24” fluted Krieger barrel with a Manners Pro Hunter Adjustable stock, TriggerTech Special and Area 419 Hellfire Match muzzle device.

And the numbers speak for themselves.

0.19 MOA and 0.23 MOA during function testing — without load development.

Chambered in 6.5 PRC and suppressor-ready, this is a serious hunting r***e built for shooters who prioritize precision and shootability in the field.

HEAD-TO-HEAD: WHICH HUNTING R***E FITS YOUR NEEDS?

There is no universal winner here. These three custom r***es address different needs in the field.

SOUTH TEXAS ARMAMENT — ELEMENT 6MM PRC
LRR-STX-0001

At 13.1 pounds, the Element is the heaviest r***e in this comparison—but that weight brings stability and shootability. Its 115-grain DTAC load reaches 3,275 fps, and the r***e has recorded a verified five-shot, 100-yard group measuring 0.264 inches.

A strong choice for the hunter who values documented precision, velocity and stability over minimum carry weight.

SOUTH TEXAS ARMAMENT — SOMBRA 6MM PRC
LRR-STX-0003

The SOMBRA cuts the system weight to 9.8 pounds while driving a 115-grain Berger VLD Hunting bullet at 3,250 fps. Its STX SOMBRA action, carbon-fiber barrel and hunting-focused configuration create a more balanced field r***e.

A strong choice for the hunter seeking 6 PRC performance in a lighter, more portable package.

Accuracy data has not yet been submitted for this r***e—an important distinction when comparing it with r***es carrying documented groups.

RIP PRECISION RI**ES — RIP 7PRC HUNTER
LRR-RIP-0008

At 10.5 pounds, the RIP 7PRC Hunter occupies the middle ground in system weight while stepping up to a 180-grain Hornady ELD-M. Its listed 0.30-MOA accuracy and heavier-bullet capability give it a different role from the two 6mm builds.

A strong choice for the hunter who needs greater bullet weight and broader big-game capability without moving into an extremely heavy r***e.

Three r***es. Three different needs:

• Maximum stability and documented precision
• Balanced 6mm field performance
• Heavier-bullet capability

BUILDER SPOTLIGHT: SOUTH TEXAS ARMAMENT

Some r***e builders assemble premium components. South Texas Armament has built something broader: a complete precision-r***e operation shaped by people who compete, hunt and handload.

Based in New Braunfels, Texas, South Texas Armament offers custom r***e building, pre-fit barrels and gas-gun barrel work alongside proprietary components such as its Sicario Gen 2, Sombra, Santo Tactical and Santo Lite receivers.

But the operation extends beyond the machine shop.

South Texas Armament also teaches precision-r***e fundamentals, positional shooting, equipment deployment, ballistic tools and wind reading. Its advanced Hill Country course puts those skills to work across canyons, high-angle engagements and rugged terrain—the same kinds of conditions its hunting r***es are expected to handle.

That crossover between competition, craftsmanship and field experience is central to the builder’s reputation. South Texas Armament was identified among the gunsmiths used by top-200 PRS Open Division shooters in Precision R***e Blog’s examination of the 2023 season. The company also reports that r***es running its barrels earned four trophies at the 2026 PRS Season Opener.

Independent discussions among precision-r***e shooters repeatedly mention the quality of the company’s work, its pre-fit capability and customers who continue returning to the same builder.

From PRS competition to demanding backcountry hunts, South Texas Armament builds r***es informed by experience on both sides of the trigger.

The build:

• TriggerTech Diamond trigger
• Nightforce NX8 4–32×50 MIL-XT optic
