MOST PARENTS ARE TOLD GRINDING IS “NORMAL.”
But what if your child’s nighttime teeth grinding is actually a sign that their body is working harder to breathe while they sleep?

At Stutsman Dentistry, we often hear parents say:

🗣️ “My child grinds their teeth, but we were told they’ll grow out of it.”

While some children do stop grinding as they get older, persistent grinding can sometimes be a clue that there’s more going on beneath the surface.

When a child falls asleep, the muscles that help support the airway relax. If the airway becomes restricted, the body may respond by activating the jaw muscles and shifting the jaw position to help maintain airflow. In some children, that response can show up as clenching or grinding.

🚩 If your child grinds their teeth, also watch for:

• Mouth breathing
• Snoring
• Restless sleep
• Night terrors
• Bedwetting
• Dark circles under the eyes
• Crowded teeth
• Frequent cavities
• Difficulty focusing or attention concerns
• Enlarged tonsils or adenoids

The teeth are often not the problem—they may simply be revealing what the body is trying to tell us.

At Stutsman Dentistry, we take a whole-body approach to dental health. Our airway-focused evaluations help identify potential concerns with breathing, jaw development, and sleep before they become bigger challenges.

Early intervention can make a significant difference in supporting healthy growth, development, sleep quality, and long-term health.

🦷 HABITS MAKING YOUR TEETH LOOK OLDER
Small habits can accelerate dental aging.

Most people associate aging with wrinkles and gray hair—but your smile can show signs of aging long before you expect it.

At Stutsman Dentistry, we often see patients who are surprised to learn that everyday habits may be causing enamel wear, staining, gum recession, and tooth damage that make teeth appear older than they should.

Here are some of the biggest culprits:

🚬 Smoking
To***co causes deep staining, increases gum disease risk, and can contribute to tooth loss.

🪥 Poor Brushing Habits
Inadequate brushing allows plaque and bacteria to build up, leading to cavities, gum inflammation, and enamel erosion.

😬 Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)
Grinding can wear down enamel, create cracks and chips, and increase tooth sensitivity.

☕ Excess Coffee Consumption
Coffee contains pigments that can stain teeth over time, while acidity may contribute to enamel wear.

🍩 Sugary Snacks & Drinks
Sugar feeds harmful bacteria that produce acids capable of damaging enamel and increasing cavity risk.

📅 Skipping Dental Visits
Small issues often become larger, more expensive problems when routine preventive care is delayed.

The good news? Many of these effects can be prevented—or even reversed—with the right dental care and healthy habits.

At Stutsman Dentistry, Drs. Chad and Danielle Stutsman focus on helping patients protect their smiles through preventive care, periodontal health, cosmetic dentistry, and comprehensive treatment designed to support long-term oral health.

🦷 DON’T IGNORE THESE WARNING SIGNS 🦷

Your mouth may be trying to tell you something important.

Many people assume dental problems will simply go away on their own. Unfortunately, symptoms like bleeding gums, bad breath, tooth sensitivity, toothaches, loose teeth, and persistent mouth sores are often your body’s way of warning you that something more serious may be developing.

At Stutsman Dentistry, we believe your oral health is closely connected to your overall health. Early detection and treatment can often prevent more complex problems, save teeth, reduce discomfort, and protect your long-term wellness.

🚨 Warning signs you should never ignore:

🩸 Bleeding Gums
Gums that bleed when brushing or flossing may be an early sign of gum disease.

😮‍💨 Persistent Bad Breath
Chronic bad breath can be linked to bacteria, gum disease, infection, or other oral health concerns.

🥶 Tooth Sensitivity
Pain when eating hot, cold, or sweet foods may indicate enamel wear, gum recession, or hidden decay.

⚡ Toothache
Persistent tooth pain is never normal and may signal infection, decay, cracks, or an abscess.

🦷 Loose Teeth
Adult teeth should not feel loose. This can be a sign of advanced gum disease or bone loss.

⭕ Mouth Ulcers That Won’t Heal
Sores lasting more than two weeks should be professionally evaluated.

The good news? Early detection leads to better treatment outcomes, healthier smiles, and fewer complications.

If you’ve noticed any of these symptoms, don’t wait until they become bigger problems.

🦷 YOUR CHILD’S FACE MAY BE TELLING YOU SOMETHING IMPORTANT

Most parents notice crooked teeth. Few realize that the way a child breathes can influence how their face, jaws, and airway develop.

When children breathe through their noses, the tongue naturally rests on the roof of the mouth, helping support proper jaw growth, facial balance, and a healthy airway.

When children consistently breathe through their mouths, we may see signs such as:

👄 Lips open at rest
😴 Snoring or restless sleep
👅 Low tongue posture
🦷 Crowded teeth or narrow dental arches
😮 Long, narrow facial growth patterns
👀 Dark circles or tired-looking eyes

These signs don’t necessarily mean something is wrong, but they may indicate that your child’s airway and facial development deserve a closer look.

At Stutsman Dentistry, Drs. Chad and Danielle Stutsman take a whole-body approach to oral health and include airway-focused evaluations to help identify concerns early. Early intervention can support healthier jaw development, improved breathing, better sleep, and long-term wellness.

If you’ve noticed your child:
✔️ Mouth breathing
✔️ Snoring
✔️ Teeth grinding
✔️ Restless sleep
✔️ Crowded teeth
✔️ Difficulty focusing
✔️ Dark circles under their eyes

…it may be time for an airway evaluation.
