Southwest Airlines will permanently end all flights at Chicago O'Hare International Airport and Washington Dulles International Airport on Thursday, June 4, 2026.

The airline announced the exit on March 13, 2026. Any Southwest flight scheduled to depart from or arrive into either airport on June 4 or after will not operate. Southwest is offering refunds to all affected passengers.

Southwest only started flying out of O'Hare on Valentine's Day 2021. The launch was a bold attempt to compete head-to-head with United and American Airlines on their home turf. It never really worked. By the end, Southwest had reduced its O'Hare service to roughly 8 daily flights.

"Operating at Chicago O'Hare continues to be challenging, and we are confident we can serve Chicagoland through our strongly-held position at Chicago Midway," a Southwest spokesperson said.

The Dulles exit is the longer story. Southwest has flown there since October 2006. But the operation was gradually marginalized after Southwest gained access to Reagan National Airport in 2012, which is far more convenient for most DC-area travelers.

The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority, which operates Dulles, said it was "disappointed" by the exit. "We hope Southwest will return to Dulles in the future," a spokesperson added.

In Chicago, Southwest will consolidate all of its flying at Chicago Midway International Airport, where it has operated for 41 years. In Washington, passengers will continue to fly Southwest from Reagan National Airport and Baltimore/Washington International Airport.
