Ben Nighthorse Campbell, a former U.S. Senator from Colorado and one of the highest-ranking Native Americans ever to serve in the federal government. Ben passed away on December 30th, 2025. He was 92 years old.
A decorated Korean War veteran, accomplished athlete, and member of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe, Campbell built a life defined by service and independence. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1987 to 1993 and in the U.S. Senate from 1993 to 2005, becoming known for his pragmatic, bipartisan approach to governance. Originally elected as a Democrat, he later switched parties,
Reflecting his belief in small business over big business politics and helping the rise of native American casinos.
Throughout his career, Campbell was a leading voice on Native American issues, veterans’ affairs, and Western land policy. Beyond politics, he was a nationally ranked judoka, an Olympic athlete, and was USA Judo coach at the 1964 Olympics. He embodied discipline and resilience both in public service and personal life.
He was also a member of the Ugly MC, Boozefighters MC USE Motorcycle Clubs, heavily involved in the Love Ride Foundation as a Board Member and a strong, positive force behind motorcycling legislation matters in Washington. He is remembered as a trailblazer who bridged cultures, challenged convention, served with integrity—and will be deeply missed.
