Spotted during a site investigation program in Brazil, this black vulture (Coragyps atratus) was keeping a close eye on our team from the shoreline.
Native to much of South America, including Brazil, black vultures are highly adaptable birds found in environments ranging from wetlands and forests to bustling cities. Unlike many birds of prey, they rely heavily on teamwork—frequently foraging, roosting, and traveling in groups.
Often misunderstood, black vultures play a vital role in the ecosystem as nature’s cleanup crew. By feeding on carrion, they help prevent the spread of disease and recycle nutrients back into the environment.

With temperatures near 90, our Glen Allen and Richmond teams in Virginia traded office attire for running shoes at this year’s Markel Corporate Run 5K – also known as “Richmond’s Biggest Office Party.”
With 174 corporate teams and thousands of runners, the night was full of fitness, networking, and celebration.
Even better – the event supported Greater Richmond Fit4Kids, helping promote health and wellness for children across the region.
A great turnout, a great cause, and a great night connecting outside the office!

🌅 Environmental remediation doesn't always happen during regular business hours.
Our environmental team is helping remediate petroleum-impacted sites throughout South Carolina using Aggressive Fluid V***r Recovery (AFVR) technology. These mobile units recover free product, contaminated groundwater, and vapors to support cleanup efforts and help clients meet regulatory requirements.
Led by our South Carolina office and supported by staff from Wilmington and Richmond, these projects often involve early mornings, late nights, and strong collaboration across teams.
And while AFVR is commonly used at fueling facilities, it can also be an effective solution for industrial sites and other locations with mixed contaminant plumes.

Our Chadds Ford, PA, team spent the day volunteering with the Geo-Institute of ASCE Delaware Valley Chapter at the American Helicopter Museum & Education Center's first‑ever STEMFest in West Chester, PA!
Our team led a hands‑on activity where kids built edible soil profiles, complete with “topsoil” Oreos, “bedrock” chocolate rocks, and gummy worms.
They enjoyed explaining geotechnical engineering to kindergartners, high schoolers, and parents alike, showing how fun engineering can be.

🌟 Improving Lives One Volunteer Opportunity at a Time 🌟
Kudos to our Richmond team who recently hosted Rebuilding Together Day and volunteered with nonprofit Boaz and Ruth to help repair and revitalize homes across the region. 🛠️🏡
Our crews worked across four houses, tackling projects like:
🌱 Creating a new garden
🪚 Fixing a front porch
🚪 Replacing doors
🎨 Painting rooms
🧱 Repairing drywall
🧩 Replacing tiles
“While it’s just one day for us, it creates a lasting positive effect for the people we help,” shared Richmond Office Manager Laura Ibsen. “Plus, it’s fun to get together outside of work and spend time together.”
Proud of our team for living our value of Stewardship and helping build stronger, more resilient communities.

A small but mighty resident of the Little River! During fieldwork at Lake Michie in North Carolina, our team spotted this crayfish tucked away along the water’s edge.
Often called “freshwater lobsters,” crayfish play an important role in the aquatic ecosystems of streams, rivers, and lakes. They help recycle nutrients by feeding on plants and organic matter and serve as a food source for fish, birds, and other wildlife.
Moments like this remind us to look a little closer—there's an entire ecosystem thriving just beneath the surface.

On National Dam Safety Awareness Day, we recognize the importance of dam safety and our shared responsibility to protect communities, infrastructure, and natural resources.
Observed annually on May 31 to commemorate the tragic 1889 failure of the South Fork Dam and raise awareness about the need for proper maintenance, inspection, emergency planning, and public education to help keep dams safe. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of the Teton Dam failure in Idaho– which catastrophically failed on June 5 during the first filling of the reservoir, releasing 80 billion gallons of water, causing over $2 billion in damages, and leading to the loss of 11 lives.
At Schnabel Engineering, we take our role in the stewardship of the nation’s dams seriously. Through our collaboration with dam owners, regulators, and other engineering firms, we support dam and levee projects across the country to help ensure the safety, resilience, and long-term performance of critical infrastructure.
