‘Crank it up as loud as you want’: Richland studio offers optimal recording environment The sun never rises on Sunset Place Recording Studio in Richland, at least not in the part where the action is. “We’re underground, so you don’t have to worry about bothering the neighbors,” owner Destin LeCornu said. “You can crank it up as loud as you want.” For...

Getting to tour Destin’s recording studio was an incredible opportunity. In this episode, he invites us behind the scenes to see everything that goes into making a state-of-the-art facility. The place has vintage vibes, and the multi-room setup gives you the sense that you walked onto a movie set.

Destin is an audio engineer, producer, teacher, and accomplished musician. He plays several different instruments, and he is a vocalist too. In our conversation, he describes how his father, a Nashville singer-songwriter, influenced him from a young age. Destin has managed to create a full-time career in the music industry, which is no small feat in a city the size of Pittsburgh.

Come with me as we check out Sunset Place Studio and learn more about what it’s like to work in this creative and exciting industry.

Banding together: Hampton grad, dad perform side by side in Altered Egos 02/02/2024

Thanks to the Pittsburgh Tribune Review and Harry Funk for the mention in this article about The Altered Egos, a great local band I've been recording. Go support them and see them live!

Banding together: Hampton grad, dad perform side by side in Altered Egos One of people’s most common fears is public speaking. For folks who have such an aversion, try to imagine public singing. As a member of the band the Altered Egos, Hampton High School graduate Ann Hodos frequently treats audiences to her vocal talents. But she’ll admit to some trepidatio...

Go give a listen to Brad Corrie’s new track, “God Who Broke My Fall”. Brad has been one of my best friends since middle school, and he’s been writing some truly heartfelt, polished songs. I had the pleasure of recording and producing this one from the ground up in my studio. Well done bro!

Our arrangement of Horatius Bonar’s 1846 Celtic hymn “I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say” performed by the Christ Church at Grove Farm worship team last week. Always love getting to play hammered dulcimer.

My latest acquisition - an Otari MX5050 MKIII 8-track tape machine. This makes me so happy. Tape is often sought after for its saturation, which can be achieved in other ways, but for me, it’s the transient softening and slight flutter and wow that deliver the sound I associate with being “warm”, emotive, almost otherworldly. It’s what forgave minor pitchiness and timing inconsistencies in decades past before our ears became attuned to the cold hard reality of 1s and 0s being crunched 44,100 times per second, forcing us to find other ways to fill that stark, blank canvas with life. But in my opinion, nothing makes music move, modulate, and bloom like oxide particles trying their best to respond to electrical impulses directly transduced from physical sound waves.

Drum tracking day is always a good day.

Almost done mixing the upcoming live album of my old band . Last month, we tracked 16 songs live in front of a sold out crowd at Club Cafe. Great energy and a super cooperative audience who dutifully refrained from applause until the very end of each song. Excited to showcase a special night featuring some special guests and , and to finally add a live album to the Sunset Place Studio repertoire.
