: During the night of Dec. 25-26, 1776, in the teeth of a snow and sleet storm, the Continental Army under Gen. George Washington crossed over the Delaware River from Pennsylvania and conducted a successful surprise attack on the Hessian Brigade in Trenton, New Jersey. The crossing is depicted in this painting by Mort Künstler. The Army used a number of large ferries, guided by cables, to move all of its horses, all of its artillery and some of its infantry across the river. The balance of the infantry crossed in other craft. The Pennsylvania Associator Artillery battalion’s 1st Company of six guns commanded by Capt. Thomas Forrest as well as the Philadelphia Light horse commanded by Capt. Samuel Morris crossed using these ferries. They played major roles in both the battles of Trenton and Princeton. These units serve with today’s Pennsylvania National Guard as the 103rd Engineer Battalion and Troop A, 1-104th Cavalry. A print of Künstler’s painting hangs in the Pennsylvania National Guard’s Joint Force Headquarters at Fort Indiantown Gap.
