π Why does a fire engine respond to some medical calls?
Itβs a question we hear from time to time: βI called for an ambulance, so why did a fire truck show up?β
The answer is simple: because firefighters are medical responders too.
All of Scott County firefighters are also certified EMTs, and medical calls are a major part of what the fire service does every day. When a fire engine is dispatched to a medical emergency, the crew arriving on that engine can begin patient care, assess the situation, provide treatment, assist EMS, and help make sure the patient gets the care they need as quickly as possible.
Sometimes a fire engine may arrive before the ambulance. Sometimes we arrive at the same time. Either way, the goal is the same: get trained help to you as quickly as possible.
Firefighters/EMTs may assist with:
β€οΈ CPR and cardiac emergencies
π« Trouble breathing
π©Έ Serious bleeding or injuries
π Patient assessment and care
πͺ Safely lifting or moving patients
πͺ Gaining access when someone cannot get to the door
π£οΈ Vehicle collisions and scene safety
π₯ Providing extra trained hands when the call requires it
So if you see a fire engine at a medical call, it does not always mean there is a fire. It means trained firefighter/EMTs are there to help.
Whether we arrive in a fire engine, a rescue truck, or alongside an ambulance, our mission is the same:
To protect life, provide care, and serve our community when we are needed most. ππ

Over the past few days, Fire Marshal Cromer had the opportunity to provide fire extinguisher awareness and proper-use training to all three shifts of Georgetown/Scott County EMS.
The training included a brief classroom portion covering the different classes of fire extinguishers and the types of fires they are designed to handle, followed by hands-on practice using extinguishers in a controlled setting.
GSCEMS ambulances operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and being prepared for a fire emergency, including one involving an ambulance, is an important part of keeping both crews and patients safe.
Thank you to all of the Georgetown-Scott County EMS staff for participating and for their eagerness to learn and be better prepared. It was a pleasure working with each shift! A big thank you to the on and off duty fire personnel for keeping us all safe during each day of trainings.

A huge thank you to Collins Fire Protection in Lexington for their generous loan of fire extinguishers to the Scott County Fire Department.
These extinguishers will be used to help train other first responders, giving them hands-on experience that directly benefits the safety of our community. Opportunities for practical training like this help make Scott County safer for everyone, and in turn also save taxpayer dollars.
We truly appreciate community partners like Collins Fire Protection that continue to support first responders and public safety. Thank you for investing in training and in the people we all serve.

Earlier today, crews from the Scott County Fire Department responded to an injury collision at the intersection of Leestown Road and Weisenberger Mill Road with an occupant trapped inside a vehicle.
Upon arrival, firefighters found one of the vehicles resting on its side with the driver unable to exit. Scott County Fire Department crews, along with an additional crew from the GEORGETOWN FIRE DEPARTMENT, immediately went to work. While one crew entered the vehicle to provide patient care and reassurance to the driver, other crews carefully stabilized the vehicle and removed the roof to create the safest and most effective access for extrication.
Thanks to the coordinated efforts of everyone on scene, crews were able to quickly remove the patient and transfer their care to Georgetown/Scott County EMS for treatment and transport.
We are proud of the teamwork displayed by all responding agencies and wish a speedy recovery to everyone involved. It is always encouraging to see neighboring departments working together as one team to protect the community we are all sworn to serve.
