⬇️ Ultimate Southern Utah Roadtrip Itinerary — from a Southwest Local ⬇️

Planning a trip to Utah this year? I’ve traveled all over Utah for the last 10 years, and if I was planning one epic road trip to see the Mighty Five, this is exactly what I would do. This itinerary hits all the major parks and takes you through some of the best the state has to offer.

The best part about this itinerary? It’s accessible from Las Vegas or Salt Lake City — you’ll start at different points within the loop. Ideally, you’ll need 10-14 days to hit not only the best of each park, but to make sure you have time for other amazing areas around Southern Utah. I’ve included some of my favorite things in each:

🔸ZION NATIONAL PARK
Observation Point
The Narrows
The Subway (permit required)
Scout’s Landing

🔸KANAB, UT
The Wave (permit required)
Wire Pass (day-use fee)
Coral Pink Sand Dunes
Red Canyon
Sand Caves

🔸BRYCE CANYON NATIONAL PARK
Fairyland Loop
Queen’s Garden to Navajo Loop
Mossy Cave

🔸ESCALANTE, UT
Lower Calf Creek Falls
Peekaboo + Spooky Slot Canyons
Escalante Natural Bridge

🔸CAPITOL REEF NATIONAL PARK
Cassidy Arch
Hickman Bridge
Pie from Gifford House

🔸HANKSVILLE, UT
Little Wildhorse Slot Canyon
Goblin Valley State Park
Bentonite Hills

🔸MOAB, UT
Arches National Park
Canyonlands National Park
Dead Horse State Park
Corona Arch

🔸MEXICAN HAT, UT
Valley of the Gods
Moki Dugway
Natural Bridges National Monument
Monument Valley

🔸PAGE, AZ
Wahweap Hoodoos
Lone Rock
Horseshoe Bend
Antelope Canyon

🗺️ Located in Kolob Canyon, the smaller, lesser known section of Zion, The Subway is now my favorite hike in the park. Yes, I’ll put it before Angel’s Landing and The Narrows without a doubt.

🎟️ This is a PERMITTED hike you can access by hiking or canyoneering and both routes require a permit by advanced or daily lottery. Wilderness Permit Information can be found via Recreation.gov. I won a daily canyoneering permit, and once confirmed, chose Left Fork TH for both entry and exit indicating we would be hiking.

#️⃣ 60 spots via seasonal lottery and 20 spots via daily lottery to = 80 people daily.

💰 $6 Application fee + $10/person

💡 Common misconception - despite being called the daily canyoneering lottery, you can still hike from the bottom-up on this permit. Your entry and exit point will be the same.

NOW TO THE HIKE:
🥾 Hiking Route (Left Fork TH) - 9 miles RT, 1300’ gain, Moderate to Strenuous depending on experience
🧗🏼‍♀️ Canyoneering Route (Wildcat Canyon TH) - 9.5 miles RT

Here’s our stats with a 3 year old in tow.
June 1 - Pick Up Permit at Wilderness Desk at Main Visitor Center
June 2 - THE HIKE
7am - Start at Left Fork TH
9:15 - Arrive at the Subway
9:15-11 - Photos
11 - Start hike back
11:15 - First application of sunscreen // we were shaded until then so here’s your encouragement to START EARLY
1:45 - Arrived at TH
Total Time = 6 hours 45 mins, plan for 6-8 hours

We were much slower on the way back, as Georgia wanted to hike in the water. The last 1.5 miles of your hike will be EXPOSED and a STEEP ASCENT to the top of the canyon.

The earlier you accept you will get wet, the easier the hike will be. Don’t waste time looking for workarounds - if the easiest way is through the water, DO IT.

24 hours in Zion National Park & Springdale, Utah

📌 Save this for your Zion NP trip ⬇️

First: Stay at Cliffrose Springdale
It’s super close to the entrance and a stunning property.

1. Breakfast at FeelLove Coffee
@feellovecoffeezion
We ordered the croissant breakfast sandwich with sausage, and the most amazing liege waffles 🧇🤤 located outside of the park approx. 5 min from entrance)

2. Hike The Narrows
One of Zion National Park’s most iconic hikes, taking you through the narrowest section of Zion Canyon. You’ll be walking directly in the Virgin River, surrounded by towering sandstone walls that reach up to 1,000 feet high. The hike is an out-and-back trail, allowing you to choose your distance and pace. Catch the shuttle or park your car (if you’re visiting in the off season) at the Temple of Sinawava for the bottom- up hike.

3. Lunch at Park House Cafe.
This eclectic cafe has great views, service, and grub! We enjoyed “Manmosas” (beer & OJ) and the Turkey & Avocado sandwich on sour dough. (Located outside of the park approx. 10 minutes from entrance)

4. Drive Zion Mount Carmel Highway
Driving the Zion-Mount Carmel Highway is a scenic journey through some of Zion National Park’s most breathtaking landscapes. This 12-mile route connects the South Entrance near Springdale to the park’s East Entrance, featuring dramatic switchbacks, towering red cliffs, and stunning vistas. Highlights of the drive include passing through the historic 1.1-mile-long Zion-Mount Carmel Tunnel, where you’ll emerge to panoramic views of slickrock formations and deep canyons.

5. Wrap the day up with a sunset at Zion Canyon Overlook Trail
An easy to moderate 1 mile, out and back trail, with a big pay off of a beautiful view of Zion Canyon! Parking is limited so plan accordingly. This is located along the Zion Mount Carmel Highway.

✨ You just arrived in Southern Utah, for the very first time. Of course you’ve heard of the National Parks, but what about these towns that offer SO much adventure beyond the Mighty Five?

💡 Accessible from a multitude of airports — Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and Grand Junction to name a few, there is so much to Utah beyond the National Parks for your visit.

▶️ Which town do YOU visit first?

1️⃣ Kanab — gateway to both Bryce + Zion, Coral Pink Sand Dunes SP, and a plethora of kid-friendly and dog friendly hikes
2️⃣ Moab — gateway to both Arches + Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point SP, Endless 4x4 dreams
3️⃣ Hanksville — close to Capitol Reef, Goblin Valley SP, and the San Rafael Swell
4️⃣ St George — close to Zion and boasts four state parks in the immediate area, you can even see an inactive volcano
5️⃣ Mexican Hat — close access to Valley of the Gods, Monument Valley, Goosenecks SP, and Natural Bridges NM
6️⃣ Escalante — an hour from Bryce and probably my favorite adventure town in Utah with SO many slot canyons and dog friendly adventures
7️⃣ Cedar City — close to Bryce and Cedar Breaks NM, Kanarraville is super close, and a few canyons that fly under the radar like Ashdown Gorge or Spring Canyon

♻️ There is nothing more important than practicing Leave No Trace on your visit. Please strive to leave this slice of paradise better than you found it by taking only photos and picking up any trash you may come across.
