Some things are so small that recycling them doesn't seem like a big deal. Take wine bottle corks. They are very small and biodegradable. Why not just throw them in the trash?
It takes the Cork Oak Tree about 25 years before the cork can be harvested from it. After that cork can be harvested from the tree every 9 years, but only cork from the very first harvest of a tree is suitable for wine corks.
Wine corks cannot be reused as wine corks because of bacterial concerns, but they can be recycled into many other useful objects such as pushpin corkboards, coasters and flooring. If the home improvement shows are any indication, cork flooring is becoming a popular option. In one weekend, I saw three home shows on HGTV that used cork flooring in their designs. Each show mentioned how environmentally friendly cork is.
While cork is environmentally friendly and renewable, it takes a long time to renew. It makes sense to recycle what cork products there already are.
So where can you recycle your wine corks? The US is a behind other countries and there aren't many programs, yet, but there are a few options.
One option is to take them to a business, like Douglas R. Harris. Jewlers, Inc. We partner with a cork recycler. So bag up your corks and bring them in, While you're in the store, peruse our fine wines. You're helping the environment while you're helping your soul.

We have to share this with all our followers. We had a customer come in wanting to scrap some old jewelry. Douglas sat with her and started the process. Upon inspecting the pieces he came across a man's watch. He asked if she was sure she wanted to scrap the watch, that it had a great band on it and could be easily converted into a keepsake bracelet. Doug and the customer drew up a design and a few weeks later, her grandson now has a bracelet that used to be his grandfathers watch.
The moral of the story is: Before you scrap your old jewelry, have an accredited jeweler, like Douglas Harris, look at your jewelry. You may have something that could be easily updated or converted into a keepsake piece. And as always, we at Douglas R. Harris, Jewelry, Inc. appreciate and respect the value of your sentimental pieces.

We were so fortunate to be invited to this exclusive showing of this year's French wines, served by the people that grew the grapes and made the wines. The Rose's are wonderful.

The shape of your wine glass affects your whole wine experience. Douglas R. Harris Jeweler, Fine Wine Division sales a wide range of Riedel barware and stemware that has been designed to enhance your tasting experience. Here is some information that explains why glass shape is so important.
"SHAPES & PLEASURE"
Stemware consists of 3 parts: the bowl, stem, and base. The height of the stem and the width of the base are part of the glass design (known as the architecture). Grape varietal specific stemware features finely-tuned glass bowls consisting of 3 variables: shape, size, and rim diameter; to translate the "message" of wine to the human senses.
"MESSAGE" OF WINE
4 SENSATIONS IN WINE
Bouquet
Grape varietal specific stemware is responsible for delivering the quality and intensity of the wine's aroma.
Texture
Grape varietal specific stemware highlights the exciting and diverse styles of "mouthfeel" in wine (watery, creamy, silky, velvety).
Flavor
Grape varietal specific stemware creates a balanced interaction between the fruit, minerality, acidity and bitter components of a wine.
Finish
Grape varietal specific stemware offers a pleasant, seamless, harmonious, and long lasting aftertaste.
"WHY SHAPE MATTERS"
The Content Determines the Shape
When developing a glass, RIEDEL's design ideas are not born on a drawing board but shaped by trial and error with the help and support of the world's greatest palates. A person interested in wine is led by color, bouquet, and taste, but often the glass is not considered as an instrument to convey the wine's message. Over the years, RIEDEL has acquired some interesting scientific explanations as to why the shape of a glass influences the bouquet and taste of alcoholic beverages. The first discovery was made while enjoying wine. The same wine displayed completely different characteristics when served in a variety of glasses. The differences were so great that experienced connoisseurs were made to believe that they were tasting different wines. The grape variety is the key factor in determining the relationship between fruit, acidity, tannin, and alcohol. As the next step, RIEDEL was able to create shapes in which the wine, vinified from specific grape varieties, seemed to improve. We started to recognize the complex role that size and shape play in conveying the message of a fine wine.
