The fire service profession is one of the most dangerous jobs in the world. When firefighters sign up for duty, they selflessly take on the risk of severe injury and death to serve and protect those in their communities.

30 firefighters have died on duty in 2026. We're not even halfway through the year.

Cardiac events. Vehicle crashes. Structure collapses. The job takes brothers and sisters in ways people outside the fire service never see.

30 names. 30 families. 30 empty chairs.

As Heat Index values continue to rise to cautionary levels, remember to take steps to stay cool and hydrated. Limit prolonged outdoor activity when possible, wear lightweight clothing, and seek air-conditioned spaces during the hottest parts of the day.

Don't forget to check on family members, neighbors, and pets who may be more vulnerable to the heat.

Stay safe and beat the heat! 🌡️💧

Garrett Fire Department recently honored the retirements of two long-standing members.
Ron Leon: 28 Years of Service
John Liechty: 26 Years of Service.
Their decades of volunteer service have left an indelible mark on our department and the residents they protected.
This milestone was celebrated alongside a dinner provided by Mayor Todd Fiandt and Cheryl Andrews in observance of National Firefighter Day.
We thank them for their steadfast dedication and wish them the absolute best in their retirement.
