The longest day: The first day of summer arrives in the Northern Hemisphere. The summer solstice is happening in the Northern Hemisphere Tuesday, marking the longest day of the year and the first day of the new season.
The event officially begins at 5:13 a.m. on the U.S. East Coast, according to the National Weather Service.
A solstice occurs when "Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt [about 23.5 degrees] toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year," the agency said.
During the solstice, the sun is at its highest point--over the Tropic of Cancer--and there are the most hours of daylight and least hours of darkness of any day in the year.
Solstices happen every June and December, occurring at the same time around the world and marking the year's longest and shortest days.
While Tuesday marks the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, it is the shortest day of the year in the Southern Hemisphere. And while summer officially begins in the Northern Hemisphere, winter gets underway in countries that are south of the Equator, such as Australia and Brazil.

Forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, a division of the National Weather Service, are predicting above-average hurricane activity this year — which would make it the seventh consecutive above-average hurricane season. NOAA’s outlook for the 2022 Atlantic hurricane season, which extends from June 1 to November 30, predicts a 65% chance of an above-normal season, a 25% chance of a near-normal season and a 10% chance of a below-normal season.
For the 2022 hurricane season, NOAA is forecasting a likely range of 14 to 21 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 6 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence.

NOAA predicts another active Atlantic hurricane season. For 2021, a likely range of 13 to 20 named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher), of which 6 to 10 could become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3 to 5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher) is expected. NOAA provides these ranges with a 70% confidence. The Atlantic hurricane season extends from June 1 through November 30.
“Now is the time for communities along the coastline as well as inland to get prepared for the dangers that hurricanes can bring,” said Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. “The experts at NOAA are poised to deliver life-saving early warnings and forecasts to communities, which will also help minimize the economic impacts of storms.”

Hurricane Predictions 2020
"It only takes one storm to significantly disrupt your life,” stated FEMA Deputy Administrator Joseph Nimmich. Preparing for the worst can keep you, your family, and first responders out of harm’s way.”
The CSU Tropical Meteorology project team predicts 16 named storms during the Atlantic hurricane season, which runs between June 1 and November 30. The research models indicate as many as eight storms will become hurricanes and our will reach major hurricane strength (Saffir/Simpson category three or higher). This outlook anticipates major power outage events and points to early homeowner preparedness as a key aspect for surviving the storms with resilience.
We often are asked; What is the best way to clean my solar panels?
First try if your garden hose alone does the job. If a lot of dust and dirt has accumulated you might need to clean more thoroughly. Fill a bucket or spray bottle with warm water and soap – no other special equipment is needed. Clean the surface of the solar panel with a soft cloth or sponge. NEVER USE COMMERCIAL CLEANERS!
However, unless you live somewhere with high amounts of smog, dust, dirt or sand blowing around, solar panel cleaning is generally not necessary. In most cases, occasional rain will be enough to naturally and safely keep your solar panels clean and free of debris that could lower production.
We are always here to help if you have any questions!

The Atlantic hurricane season is June to November, with the peak season from mid-August to late October. On average there are 6 hurricanes, three which are categorized as “major,” each year. History provides important examples of the potentially dangerous impact hurricanes can have and the need to be prepared.
Prepare for the storm:
Charge all phone and communications devices
Unplug all electronics and move them as high as possible
If recommended by utilities or emergency offices, turn off breakers to avoid power surges
Weather the storm:
Stay indoors during hurricanes and away from windows and glass
Never operate a portable generator inside your home
Never connect a generator directly into your homes wiring unless a transfer switch has been installed
Always use GFCIs in areas where water and electricity may come in contact
Recover from the storm:
Do not use electrical equipment and electronics, including receptacles, that have been submerged in water
Have a qualified electrician inspect any water damaged electrical equipment and electronics
Stay away from downed power lines. If you encounter a downed power line, stay at least 35 feet away and do not touch the line or anything that may be in contact with the line
