AI Vision Assistance - check this out! 🤓

This is the kind of news worth celebrating.

Meta has announced a new initiative to provide Ray-Ban Meta AI glasses to blind and low-vision veterans across the country, in partnership with the Blinded Veterans Association and other veteran and accessibility organizations.

These glasses are not a replacement for a guide dog, a cane, or the hard-earned adaptive skills that blind veterans use every day. But they can become another powerful tool - helping read text, identify objects, describe surroundings, and support greater independence through voice-controlled AI technology.

What makes this even more meaningful to us is the role of our friend Don Overton.

Don is a U.S. Army veteran who lost his sight after a bunker explosion during Desert Storm. Years ago, we had the honor of meeting Don through the American Humane Hero Dog Awards. His guide dog, Pierce, was honored as the 2017 Hero Guide/Hearing Dog, the same year Atlas the Wonderdog was honored as the 2017 Hero Service Dog.

That shared experience created a connection we have never forgotten.

To see Don continuing to advocate, lead, and help drive a partnership that could benefit thousands of blinded veterans is truly incredible. This is what continued service looks like. It is veterans using their lived experience to open doors for others.

Meta has said this program was inspired by Don’s experience with the glasses and the independence they helped him regain. That matters. Technology is at its best when it is shaped by the people who actually need it, use it, and understand what independence really means.

Congratulations, Don. We are proud to know you, proud to have shared that Hero Dog Awards chapter with you and Pierce, and grateful to see your continued work helping other veterans.
