A tornado warning went out last night for Southern Maryland, where our farm is. We saw it and didn't think much of it. There are so many warnings that never turn into anything, and we figured this would be another one. It wasn't on my mind at all when I went to bed.

Then at 7:45 this morning we got a text from our neighbor. Our driveway was completely blocked. Several trees, some of them more than five feet across, had come down across it overnight. We were an hour away with no way to get there, no idea if our chickens were okay, no idea what shape the farmhouse was in.

And then our neighbors did something I still can't get over. They brought their own tractors and chainsaws down to our place and cleared those enormous trees out of the driveway themselves. Nobody asked them to. They did it out of the goodness of their hearts.

The community down in Southern Maryland is something I don't quite have words for. It is easy to lose a little faith in people. A few neighbors with chainsaws and big hearts handed mine right back, and reminded me that people are good and they show up for each other when it counts.

I am so grateful for the neighbors we have at the farm, and I am praying that everyone across Southern Maryland came through this safe.

Your treatment room gets your body, and the business gets whatever energy is left.

Most spa owners don’t realize there are two very different kinds of revenue in their business.

There’s provider revenue — what you generate with your own hands, your own skill, your own time. It’s real. It’s earned. And it disappears the moment you step back.

Then there’s business revenue. What the business generates independent of your presence. That’s the number that actually tells you whether you’ve built an asset or a practice that needs you to survive.

Most of us have built a practice. There’s nothing wrong with that — it’s how the growth happened. But there’s a next layer to build, and it starts with knowing the difference.

Your books are full and the money still isn't there.

You did everything the industry told you to do. You built the wait list. Your providers are busy. Your front desk is fielding calls. And at the end of the month, the number doesn't match the effort — and you cannot figure out why.
