This work is far from easy. 🛑 It means answering calls from devastated families at all hours, spending long days and sleepless nights monitoring cellular cameras, developing precision humane trapping strategies, and braving every kind of weather imaginable—from freezing winter winds to scorching summer heat. 💨☀️

Behind every missing pet is a family experiencing intense fear, heartbreak, and uncertainty. Being able to help turn those moments of despair into joy, relief, and healing is a privilege we never take for granted. 🩹

But our mission extends far beyond recovery. 📚 We remain deeply committed to educating our community about pet safety, prevention, proper identification, and microchipping—because preventing a pet from going missing in the first place is just as important as bringing them home.

Renting with pets is about to get easier in the nation’s capital.

Washington, D.C. is set to enact “Roscoe’s Law,” which bans breed and size restrictions on cats and dogs in rental housing. The law also caps pet rent and security deposits and includes funding to support shelters that help people experiencing homelessness keep their pets.
Supporters call the move a landmark step for pet housing rights, saying it could prevent unnecessary surrenders by helping families stay housed together.

That's white clover — and it's doing more for your lawn than most people realize.

Clover is a legume. Its roots host bacteria that pull nitrogen from the air and fix it into the soil. That's the same nitrogen your fertilizer bag delivers. A lawn with healthy clover cover is producing its own nitrogen without the bag 🌿

Clover used to be included in lawn seed mixes as a standard ingredient. It was removed when broadleaf herbicides became common — the herbicides killed clover along with dandelions, and seed mixes were reformulated without it. The plant didn't change. It just stopped being included.

🌱 Why it's worth leaving:

- Clover shows up where nitrogen is low — which is exactly the nutrient it manufactures. The yellow, thin patches in the lawn are where clover does its best work

- The white flower heads bloom from May through September and feed honeybees, bumblebees, and native solitary bees during months when mowed lawns offer nothing else

- Clover stays green through summer drought when grass around it goes brown and dormant. It's the reason some lawns look better in August than others

- Killing clover with broadleaf herbicide removes the nitrogen source your grass was using — the turf often yellows afterward and needs more fertilizer to recover. The spray creates the problem the fertilizer solves

- If your lawn already has clover patches, mow at three inches and let it work. You already have a self-fertilizing system running

The plant most people spray is the one keeping the lawn fed between applications 🌿

Today, May 20th, we celebrate the incredible rescue dogs who have overcome fear, abandonment, neglect, heartbreak, and uncertainty to find love, safety, and a second chance. 🐕❤️

But today is also about something bigger.

It’s about the shelters, rescues, fosters, volunteers, animal control officers, transport teams, and advocates who are fighting every single day to save lives in the middle of an overwhelming animal welfare crisis.

Right now, shelters across our country — including right here in Maryland and throughout the DMV — are beyond full. Many county shelters are operating at or over capacity every single day. Local rescues we follow and work alongside are exhausted, desperate for fosters, and struggling to keep up with the endless stream of animals coming from heartbreaking situations. 😢🐾

Dogs are being abandoned.
Families are surrendering pets due to housing and financial hardship.
Neglect and cruelty cases continue to rise.
And rescue groups are stepping in over and over again to save the animals no one else will. 🥺

These organizations are pulling dogs from overcrowded shelters, dangerous environments, medical neglect cases, and heartbreaking living conditions daily. They are bottle-feeding puppies through the night, covering massive veterinary bills, transporting scared dogs to safety, and begging for foster homes just to save one more life. 🏡❤️

And the truth is… they cannot do it alone anymore.

At Tailed Treasures, we see firsthand how deeply these rescuers care. The emotional toll is heavy. The financial strain is real. Yet somehow, these amazing humans continue showing up day after day because every single life matters. 🐾✨

So today, we ask our community to do more than celebrate rescue dogs.
