Since my senior year in college, my vision has been to study North Korea as a social geographer and to help resolve inter-Korean social conflicts after reunification.

I have long observed that while North Korea has maintained the same policies since division—such as military-first politics and nuclear armament—South Korea’s approach keeps shifting with each administration. Yet, at their core, both conservatives and progressives ultimately share the same goals: reform and opening in North Korea, freedom and democracy for its people, and peace and reunification.

What truly matters is recognizing North Korean defectors, especially those in China, as refugees who must be protected from repatriation, and ensuring that those who resettle in South Korea receive support to adapt successfully.

I hope, as in Germany where reunification began in a small rural church, Korea’s path to reunification will also begin from something small—like a single cloud or a faint breeze.
