Have you seen the art on our walls lately? Katrina Rocha was one of our featured artist for our July Artwalk and we are ecstatic with her work. Her ability to depict leaves for their true essence is incredible. It’s a also a plus that the containers she paints are beautiful alcohol bottles. As plant lovers we know everything is better with plants. Katrina is a CSUF alumni and we are so proud to showcase her work this month. Huge thank you to Katrina for the collab! Come on by and find some art for your walls.

Happy Independence Day from this Showstopper- the Rose Glow Caladium! This Plant of the Week is fireworks without the annoying booms or damage to our air quality. The one way it is similar to fireworks would be its toxicity, please make sure to keep this plant away from pets and small humans as ingesting it can cause illness. Caladiums are a great addition to a collection as their showy leaves last much longer when placed indoors. As an outdoor perennial, plants are active in the spring and summer but when indoors you see plenty of beautiful leaves through the fall.

Native to Brazil, this plant will love additional humidity and will thank you by producing more leaves. Pebble trays or humidifiers can assist with this. The most important thing to keep in mind with caladiums is to protect the beautiful leaves, medium light is best to prevent scorching the leaves. Keep this plant away from AC vents or other drafty areas as it can cause unnecessary stress to the leaves. During the warmer months, keep soil moist until fall comes around. Caladiums love acidic soil and potassium so get those coffee grounds in the soil. When leaves start falling, scale back the watering and prune. If you want a bushier caladium a great tip is to snip the main bulb to produce more the secondary leaves and create a fuller plant. Caladiums can go dormant in the fall and winter months as most tubulars do but do not worry, they’ll be back!!

If you already have one of these beauties in your collection tag us in your posts to receive a special discount on these plants. Additionally, as our Plant of the Week, all caladiums in store will be 10% off!

Happy Fourth to all, may our country wrap up this year ugly phase and strive for freedoms to all.

Happy Summer Monday! Meet your very purple and regal Plant of the Week- the Tradescantia Silver Plus. If you’re looking for a quick growing, low maintenance super easy propagator, look no further! Tradescantias look especially beautiful as hanging plants or on a shelf where their length can be showcased. The leaves of this plant are a vibrant green and purple with shimmery silver markings.

Native to North and South America, Tradescantias are named after John Tradescant the Elder an English naturalist, gardener, collector and traveler who did extensive work with elite families and royalty during the 15th century. The royal purple color makes a lot of sense in this! The ability in which this plant was easily propagated led to its popularity and quick saturation of European households.

The foliage of a Tradescantia is easy to maintain and can be made to be made fuller by potting cuttings at its base. Since the leaves and stems retain ample water, it is a more forgiving plant when you forget to water it. Nonetheless, the soil of a Tradescantia should be kept moist and should not be left to dry out more than 50%. Tradescantias will grow best in bright indirect light and can be transitioned outdoors so long as it is not in direct sunlight for too many hours. If the leaves of your tradescantia start looking limp, it might not be getting enough sunlight. Fertilizer during the growing season will go a long way with Tradescantias. Along with the gorgeous foliage, Tradescantias will bloom white, blue, yellow or pink flowers during its growing season. After flowering, trimming the plant can bring forth more blooms and create a bushier plant.

Share your Tradescantias with us so we can showcase them in our stories! If you don’t already have one come on by and check out our selection.
