Waking up suddenly, or "sleep maintenance insomnia," is often caused by stress, high cortisol levels, or sleep disruptions like apnea, alcohol, or a noisy environment. It is normal to experience light awakenings, but frequent, abrupt waking with racing thoughts or fear may indicate anxiety, physical health conditions, or poor sleep hygiene.
