The end of Madison Taylor’s storybook college women’s lacrosse career could not have been scripted much better.
The former Wantagh girls lacrosse legend ended her collegiate playing career leading Northwestern to the NCAA Division I national championship with a 14-11 victory Memorial Day weekend playing on the Wildcats' home field in Evanston, Ill.
Four days after wearing a Northwestern uniform for the final time on a sunny spring day along Lake Michigan, Taylor’s final NCAA chapter got that much brighter in Washington D.C. when she was awarded the prestigious Tewaaraton Award given annually to the nation’s top college player.

The main character in Katie Yee’s debut novel is never named, but inside Baldwin Public Library, readers spoke about her as if she were someone they knew.
Yee joined the library’s afternoon book discussion group early last month for a conversation about her novel, “Maggie; or, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar,” which follows an unnamed narrator navigating divorce, breast cancer, motherhood and betrayal.

The Amityville School District is asking the New York State commissioner of education to conduct a recount of the school board election results from May 19.
While the district does not anticipate that the review will change the results announced on election night, Superintendent Gina Talbert said the district wants to “ensure accuracy and integrity of the election process.”

The Long Beach City Council voted to pierce the statewide tax cap by 1.5 percent during a special city council meeting held the morning of May 29. The tax increase connects to the planned 2027 budget, with anticipated expenses increasing nearly $5.5 million, or roughly 5 percent. The rising tax will result in an average increase of $229 per household per year.

Dr. Patrick O’Shaughnessy has stepped down as president and chief executive officer of Catholic Health, effective immediately, the organization announced on Tuesday.
Following his departure, Gary Havican, the organization’s chief operating officer, has been appointed interim president and chief executive officer. Catholic Health’s Board of Directors has begun a national search for a permanent successor.

For Nyaira N. Staley, walking across the stage as Nassau Community College’s valedictorian was about much more than earning a perfect grade-point average.
